Subject: Am I losing too much weight?

At the beginning of summer I was 190 lbs and I am 5' 10".  I was in the overweight category for sure.

Well since tri-ing, I have lost 26 lbs and am down to 164.  I feel that I could lose a few more lbs, basically some leftover mid-section in my opinion.

However, I'm starting to get a bunch of comments like, 'don't lose anymore weight' and 'boy, you're getting really thin'  Even one older lady told me that my weight loss made me look older!!!  That's the last thing I want to hear...getting closer to 40...(well, maybe not the LAST thing).

By weight charts etc, it says I'm fine.  But did I over do it?  And what is a good healthy weight in your opinion?  I'm NOT trying to get in IM triathlete shape.  Just age grouper, short distance for now.

Thanks for your time and opinions.

Make sure you're hitting the weight room to keep the muscle mass. You could be looking older because of looking more cut in the face -- people interpret that as wrinkles. Whatever.

I lost 14 lbs this year without trying, just from increased bike mileage. At your height, I went from 164 to 150. Thought my bike mileage got me through the 154 mile RAMROD, my other sports were "sprint shape".

6'4" 170lbs and could stand to lose a few more.  Don't worry about people saying you're too thin.  Worry about your doctor saying it - and then get a second opinion from a doctor that is an endurance athlete.  And then lose 10 more.

Ha, I was just being funny, but thanks for the reply.

@briderdt - I haven't been able to lift b/c of a broken finger (been 3 weeks and need to wait another 3).  I was thinking that when I get to lifting again, it may help with that gaunt look.  thanks for the reply!

I don't think you are losing too much.  I think our society has got use to people being overweight.  I got some of the same comments when I lost weight and everyone that was making those comments were overweight.

I agree with Goose.  No.

Most likely, you've just lost enough weight that your skin (and perhaps your clothes, too) doesn't quite look right on you.  I went through the same thing a year ago.. people telling me that I was too thin, etc.   However, I had simply gone down to the weight I was 20 years ago, so I knew it was a healthy weight for me.  I was eating well and exercising regularly... my body just needed to catch up to itself on the changes it was going through.  On top of that, people were accustomed to 'fat Chris', not 'healthy Chris'... so, it was foreign to them to see me like that.

I'm 5'11", 165 seems about right, depending on your frame 155 is certainly not out of the question.

This is the story of my life.

I'm still above 250. I have honestly had more than one person that lives near me, tell me that "oh no you don't want to lose more weight." They've never seen me in cycling gear.

THAT is how fat my locale is.

What does your significant other think? That is what matters. My husband is too thin for me right now but his IM is 3 days so it's all good.

As they say, you choose your a$$ or your face.

No.  When people are accustomed to seeing you one way, it may be shocking to them to see you differently, especially in the face.

I trained a female client who was pushing 200 at 5' 6" and dropped to 130 over the course of a year.  130 is by no means scrawny or sickly looking for a girl of her height and we had packed some nice muscle on her.

But her family, both the chubby and the not chubby ones didn't like seeing her fit.  They were just used to her as she had been her whole life, overweight.  Yes, her face showed a few more lines but you know what?  Now a year plus after her weight loss, it seems like those lines have faded like the slightly looser skin tightened back up (she's mid-30's).

For every person who says, "you're too thin", there may be another saying you're just right.  Those people are just less likely to say it.

My question wouldn't be "Am I losing too much weight?" It would be.. What does my diet look like in relationship to my exercise level.

If you are eating clean.. and getting enough: lean protein, complex carbs, plenty of fruits and veggies, limited starch and sugar, and feeling full enough, (not too hungry, or too full) then whatever your body settles on..

That's good.

Good nutrition to fuel my athletic body is what I am focusing on.. Not what my scale says in terms of weight loss.

I am getting similar comments.

At 6'6" I was up to 265lbs lat year, before I started working out.

By now I am down to 205lbs. (with my weight fluctuating a bit).

I posted this picture on FB and got comments that the middle pic is the best looking...

Personally I think I can drop another 10lbs to 15lbs, as my BF is supposedly at 13%.

My wife and others say I am too skinny already...

My doc said I should not to loose too much more, I noted 185lbs would be nice and she did not protest...

I do to a point.  If your spouse wants you to weigh 500 lbs then probably not.

But adding or droping 5lbs will not get me on the podium at a race, but it might make a difference in my placement at home.

My weight fluctuates from week to week sometimes more than 5lbs....

So by your theory I would be in trouble one week and not the other?

That's a 10 lb. swing on a chance at a roll in the hay.......How many times a day do you have to weigh yourself to see if you should even ask? Laughing

In today's society someone that is fit is going to look skinny to most people.  For me it is more about comfort than looks.

I am 5'9", six years ago I was at my heaviest at around 165 lbs., even though I didn't look overweight I felt uncomfortable and was not ready to go up another pants size.  Since then I have made exercise part of my lifestyle and am down to 150 lbs, I do not think that I am skinny but when I go to family functions where most people are overweight I am called a "Twig".  When training for a key race last year I was down to 144 lbs, that's when my wife said that I was getting too thin.

At 5'10" your BMI (which for endurance athletes is mostly meaningless) is higher than mine and I do not feel too thin.  But as I said, in today's overweight society (at least in the U.S.) fit people will look too thin.
