My weight fluctuates from week to week sometimes more than 5lbs....

So by your theory I would be in trouble one week and not the other?

Eh 5 pounds was jsut a number I pulled out of the air.  I'm not saying it does affect me on a week to week basis, I'm just arguing that spousal approval is important.

Thanks for all the great responses!

@KateTri - thanks for the food tips.  I'm probably 80/20 on eating clean.  I need to eat a few more veggies, but I do stay away from sugars and starches pretty well.  Early on it was cutting out all the bad stuff I was eating - sodas, sugars, etc.  Now I'm adjusting again to try to improve my diet.  So I'm on the road to 90/10.

My wife says she doesn't want me to get too thin.  But she says I'm not there yet.  I do believe the spouse is a significant consideration and thanks for bringing that up.  My whole lifestyle has pretty much changed.  She's very very supportive.  I think that 155 is probably the too thin range for her.  So we'll see I suppose.

But thanks a bunch, I figured people say things like that based 1) my previous appearance and 2) our growing obese society.  But wanted to see what other experiences were.

I don't think you are losing too much.  I think our society has got use to people being overweight.  I got some of the same comments when I lost weight and everyone that was making those comments were overweight.

This is exactly what i was thinking.

people shouldn't feel comfortable being overweight. that should make them uncomfortable. anyone who says otherwise is sorely mistaken. instead of a person trying to trick their mind into being comfortable with their body how it is, they should just loose some weight. then they should feel comfortable with themselves.

I don't think I would get the same reaction if i stopped showering.

I'm sure I'll get hammered for this but it's almost amazing how a decade or two of messages such as "love yourself for yourself" and anti-skinny ads have changed the populace's idea of what is healthy and what is not.

i know there are! but do you think any of them ever look at themselves and think otherwise? do you think they would be happier if they weren't overweight?

Every overweight person i know that i am close with is unhappy with themselves. they may be happy in general, but not with themselves.

my thought is that if someone is self-conscious about their weight trying to teach them to "love you body how it is" is not going to cure any self-consious issues they may have. it will just mask it. every time they look in the mirror is a trigger to those thoughts.

it is just like having alcohol by a recovering alcoholic. your can teach the alcohol to deal with the trigger, but the trigger is there and there is a greater chance of relapse.

But adding or droping 5lbs will not get me on the podium at a race, but it might make a difference in my placement at home.

Really?

i know right!?  i really hope my husband didn't marry me because at 28 i was pretty skinny.  my weight has fluctuated in a 15 or 20 pound range as long as he's known me.

I was fully happy at 265lbs, then I changed my mind.

But my thinking is that at a young age your body can handle the weight, being healthy (food and weight) is an investment in your future (money and life quality).

I went from 260lbs to 195lbs and I am 6'1. I often get told that I lost too much weight but I think I will stay right where I am at. When I go for my IM in 2 years, I will probably try to drop to 185lbs for my race weight. Dont worry about what others say. If you feel good and look good then you are good.

It's also because they are used to you being a certain way for a long time.  Change is what's noticeable, in either direction.

I've been the same build my entire life (6'2", 150-160).  See my avatar.  None of my friends think twice about it though.  If you maintain weight for awhile, those negative comments will fade away.

Totally agree.  There is an absolutely unhealthy obsession with thinness in Hollywood and among celebrities but swinging the pendulum in the completely opposite direction is no good either.

Saying, "I'm not thin but am at a healthy weight for my height and I'm happy with my imperfect body" is totally different than saying, "I'm overweight or even obese and am happy with my imperfect body".  Self acceptance is great but only with a side of reality.  Being very overweight and not even trying to do anything about it is not loving yourself.

I think things have changed a lot in the past 20 years. I remember watching Seinfeld in the 90's and thinking that George Costanza was fat. Now when I watch the reruns, I don't think he's slim, but he doesn't look that big. Some of that might be me, though. I was more weight-obsessed then than I am now.

Newman, on the other hand, still looks big.

I think it's like that red chair in the middle of a white room, it really sticks out and makes a bold statement.  Once all the surrounding walls are painted red to match it suddenly gets lost in the mix.

I was in the mid 240's in May when I decided to get in shape once and for all.  Im 6'2" and carried the weight pretty well.  Ive now lost 40 lbs and had to laugh when I ready your post because in the last two days several people have told me I need to stop losing weight and that Im looking to thin.

I still have about 10-15 lbs that id like to lose in fat, and I hope to put on about 5 or so in muscle.  I think the comments come from the fact that people aren't used to the change and are just used to looking at you a certian way.  They will eventually get used to it.  As long as your happy and healthly then enjoy.

There are very few people in this country that are truly under weight unless they are sick. My sister made a comment at a HIM I did about a month ago that she had never seen so many fit people in one place in her life. I think this statement says a lot about our society in general. I didn't see anyone that I thought was under weight, they were just in good shape and much closer to their ideal weight then the population in general.

To the OP - Don't worry about being too light, it is very unlikely you will lose too much weight.

For me it's not so much "how" my husband looks, but whether or not he's gonna be around to get old with me.

That's why I appreciate his fitness. I just want him here and healthy. :-)

I have a similar profile to yours.

Prior to Tri's I was 185ish lbs. Got down to 145, and now hover between 145-150. My body seems to like this weight and easily maintained.

People have made some surprising, and sometimes hurtful comments, but you learn to ignore them and be stoked you can shed that weight!

While you do have to be concerned with how much weight you lose, the body has a way of making sure you don't go too far.

At 145, I'm very happy and feel great.  I never thought I'd get rid of the "ponch" and "love handles" but by golly I did.

I think I cold stand to gain a couple of pounds (but would aim for muscle).  At my lightest this season I was down to 147lbs on a 6'1 frame.  I notice it mostly in the face.  If I could just get rid of the hollow feature a little bit I'd be happy...Otherwise I'm fine with weighing 30lbs less than my training partner.

I would also say no.  I have lost 54# since Feb so I get the same comments.  However, at 5'11" and 193# I am not close to being "too thin".  It isn't the weight, it is the perceived difference in how you look now and how you looked before.  My doctor has refrained from suggesting a goal weight and just tells me as long as I am eating well and exercising to let me body tell me what that should be.

You are doing great.  Keep up your nutrition, swap muscle mass for fat through your execise and it will land where it lands.  Keep up the good work.

I'm same height.  I weigh 170 lbs and get comments all the time about my weight.  In my opinion, I'm the right weight for my height.  I used to be about 165 lbs too until I started lifting more and gained more muscle weight.  Although when I was was 165 lbs, I never wanted to lose more weight.  I'm fine at 170 lbs and with the addition of extra muscle find myself a faster runner then when I was 165 lbs with less muscle.

Some weight charts are ridiculous and too simple, like the BMI.

You can lose weight until you feel that your performance suffers. I am 6 2 and 165lb. If I lose 3-4lbs I will usually feel more tired, and less energetic and less powerful. Just listen to your body and own thoughts. I would also argue that if you were too thin you could not be physically fitter than 99.9% of the population or maximize your own potential. And anyway, too thin with respect to what? You are a triathlete, that's your purpose!
