It was a snake swim in a pool with people dropping in every 10 seconds. I seeded my self at a 6:30 swim. But I totally lost it toward the end of the first 100. I don't know if it was because of the thought of other people watching me, or not being prepared enough, but I had to stop at edges frequently until the end of the swim. Not what I was expecting. I thought I would have to worry about the swim the least!
What would you do differently?:

I don't think that I could swim a 400 again as poorly as I did that one. Admittedly, my neck was twinge-ing leading up to the race and I wasn't able to practice very much at all, but I didn't figure 400 in a pool would be hard.
Transition 1
  • 02m 48s

I was pretty wiped after the swim. I totally felt strange getting out of the pool, almost blackout strange, but not like I was going to pass out, just in a really tired kind of way, if that makes sense.
What would you do differently?:

I will definitely push through the fatigue next time. And maybe not use socks, and do better at getting my clothes on. Maybe I'll learn how to attach my bike shoes to my pedals.
  • 47m 9s
  • 14 miles
  • 17.82 mile/hr

I didn't really push it on the bike. Took it easy and tried to save energy for the run. I'd been having some foot problems, and therefore endurance problems with running.

I definitely got passed by a lot of people. The slower swim seeds caught up and passed me. It's a tricky thing not knowing who is really in front or behind of you with a staggered start.
What would you do differently?:

Next time I'll hammer it out, and not be so worried about saving energy for the run.
Transition 2
  • 00m 59s

This was pretty straightforward, and went ok. Shoes off, shoes on, grab some water and go.
What would you do differently?:

It didn't really go too poorly. But transitions do need more practice.
  • 16m 53s
  • 2 miles
  • 08m 26s  min/mile

I'm not sure of the distance. It could have been more than two miles. Anyhow, it went fine. I took a moderate pace due to lack of fitness. It went as well as it could have. I hammered out the final quarter mile and hauled in a number of people (though I know they started the swim behind me, and were, in fact, beating me to the line). As I crossed the line someone said, "You look like you could run another mile!" All I thought was, that was the point. I came ready to run a 5k.
What would you do differently?:

I think I can start picking it up earlier for the finish.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a medal and grabbed some munchies.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough practice, and the learning curve of my first race. I had the energy to do more (as I discovered later in the day while playing two hours of basketball).

Event comments:

I know I can cut a chunk of time off of a sprint next time I do one. I know I have more potential. I'll do better in each category. This will spur me on to faster times.
