Overall Rank = 61/154
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 7/21
Pre-race routine:

Powerbar and Gatorade for breakfast
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 50m 47s
  • 1640 yards
  • 03m 06s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was good and bad. The good was that I felt strong throughout, even at the end (good implications for my HIM swim in 5 weeks). The bad is that I was WAY off course most of the swim after the first turn bouy. Between the current and just not being able to see the next bouy well I think I probably ended up swimming 100-200 meters extra (at least it felt like I did). Everyone else seemed to be affected similarly. Overally, I'm pretty happy because in one sense it went about as bad as it could have (current, off course), but in another it went great because I just kept on chugging and felt great the whole time.
What would you do differently?:

Sight better
Transition 1
  • 04m 22s
Comments:

I was a bit slow in the transition because of having to put everything into one bag. Actually got the bottom of my wetsuit off pretty quickly this time around. Still need to work on getting the top off quicker. I did the waterbottle to clean my feet off thing and that worked really well.
What would you do differently?:

Be quicker.
Bike
  • 1h 05m 2s
  • 22.99 miles
  • 21.21 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt strong on the bike. Only got passed by people and caught a bunch of people. Right hamstring started hurting a bit on the last lap and a half. Also, drank nearly my whole 2nd water bottle on the last lap in preparation for the run. Bad idea.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. I was pretty happy with the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

Did the shoes off while biking thing. That went well, but almost fell over when I hopped off. Had a hard time finding my area, but most of that was because of the random bike racked above my stuff that akagan mentioned in his race report.
What would you do differently?:

Be more careful getting off of the bike.
Run
  • 44m 55s
  • 6.5 miles
  • 06m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Started off in pain. Bad side stitch, upset stomach (too much water on last lap of bike), and pretty bad hamstring twinge. Twinge went away about a mile in, and the side stitch eased up about 2 miles in. I was really annoyed that they didn't have mile markers but whatever. I managed to pass people the whole way and not get passed myself. One of the perks of being a slow swimmer. Overall it felt pretty good, although I think I could have gone faster if I hadn't had the sidestitch and hamstring pain. Lastly, wish I would have known it was a 6.5 mile run beforehand, but again, not really a big deal.
What would you do differently?:

Not overload on water right before the run. Run harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking and some stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The swim.

Event comments:

Only gripes were the lack of buoys on the swim and mile markers on the run. Other than that, the event was fantastic, and I will definitly be back next year.

Congrats on a great race Ray!  I like your description of the swim as "sort of martini glass shaped"!  I am sure you passed me on the run at last once or twice at the speed you were going!  I was the one limping through the woods using a few four letter words as everyone passed me.   Yep, coming out of the swim fast doesn't do one darn thing if you can't run.

Good luck on your HIM!!!
