Subject: Deuces Wild returns to June
Just saw that Deuces Wild is going back to being in June! Works out much better with my schedule so I am considering it. I want to do the Half distance and would love some feedback as to the course, support, specifics to the S/B/R - like how was the swim - cold? I heard the Bike course wasn't closed in years past and there were several accidents. How was the run - trail/path?
Thanks for all/any advice! I'm getting a little tired of the Tempe races and want to see what the rest of AZ has to offer! Appreciate it!

The June 1-2 dates set up great with the Mountain Man events, Nathan Tempe, and Soma Tempe. It's a great race schedule leading up to IMAZ in Nov.

I've heard great things about this race...I was planning on doing Boise 70.3 in June, but this would be closer and less likely to be shortened due to cold weather!

I raced Boise last year, it wasn't shortened due to the cold. It was shortened due to extreme rain and wind. Would love to go back and race it again. I think the race has only had "nice" weather one or two years in the race's history. It always seems to be cold, wet and rainy but it's a beautiful course and a good race.

Deuces Wild is a great half. The bike course isn't closed but after the first few miles you get off the main road for most of the race and you're on farm roads without much traffic. There's a big climb on the final stretch. I raced the half in 2011 and it was hot and windy. A tough race for sure but an enjoyable one.

I didn't think the rain was that bad. Mostly just sprinkles from what I remember...I thought they said they were shortening it due to "hypothemic conditions" which I took as "cold". I love Boise... grew up there and have a lot of family and friends still there. I haven't made up my mind yet, but Dueces would certainly be easier financially. But Boise is awesome...

While we're discussing the summer schedule, I was hoping some of you vets could help me out.  I'm new to triathlon and am currently signed up for four races -

  • HIM CA (Oceanside) 70.3 - 3/30/13
  • Nathan's Tri (Tempe) - 9/22/13
  • Soma Half - 10/16/13
  • IMAZ - 11/17/13

I'm going to sign up for Deuce's but I'm not sure whether to do do the Olympic or Half Iron?  What do you guys think (not sure how many long races to do before IMAZ)?  I'm also planning on doing the Mountain Man Olympic in August.

Depends on the weather.  I did it 2 years ago when it was in June and the water temp was pretty nice.  I think 67 degrees.  the run was warm that day tho'.

great event.  Hmmm.  only 6-1/2 weeks after Boston tho'.  That's tight scheduling for my old, slowly recovering body.  Maybe the Oly for me.

I wish I would have seen this note BEFORE I went and signed up for the San Diego RnR Marathon that first weekend in June.  Cannot be in two places at once, I suppose. Yell

Boo!  Saw it coming though with the low turnout last year which I suspect was mostly do to with worlds being the same weekend.

From what I heard, they only moved it so TriSports could focus on opening their Tempe store. They planned to move it back even before the lower turnout.

Low turnout was also due to schools being back in session - lots of Tucson people usually bring the kids and make a trip out of it, but with school starting again, it was harder.

Too bad though, they weather was awesome!

Ah, I suppose that makes perfectly logical sense (much unlike my previous post, wow was that ever illogical) then.  Hopefully I can make it back this year but not sure if that's going to happen now with the new date.

Do you guys think a full sleeve wetsuit is a necessity for this one? Or could one get by with a sleeveless? Found a website that estimates the current water temp at 57...COLD.

I'd go full if possible. I also plan on having my neoprene cap handy incase the water stays that cold!

I'm planning to race the OLY on Saturday and swim in a relay on Sunday

I'm doing the Olympic (my first)!  And yes, bringing the family up from Tucson to take a few days off for family time!

Hope to see some of you up there!

I am excited to be participating in the Half. Sounds like a tough course so I will be doing hill work to get used to the altitude. I made a family trip out of it. We are camping at Fools Hollow Lake.

Leadman 125 Epic - FINISHED
Deuces Wild
Mt. Man Half
Soma Half (This one is nuts because I have to be at work after I finish)

AZ Iron Man

Awesome schedule.
