Hey everyone, I am still alive...here is what has been happening.

  • Neck/should -still bugging me, still waiting to get in to see neurologist.
  • Work-went from 3 days a week from home to 5 days in office-depressing to say the least.
  • sump pump died in basement....water in basement. no more cycle trainer until all repairs done--carpet/drywall/paint etc. Garage full of basement stuff.
  • weather-freaking snowfall warning, up to 6" of snow.
  • Positive: had a great time at the Alzheimer's Pro-am hockey tourney
  • been gettting a bit more biking in...kind of!
  • Been enjoying all the positives from everyone one here! Good to see success!

I've got 2 more positives to add to your list: 1) The 6" of snow warning should keep you out of a speedo for a few more weeks.  Amen to that!  2) What about the beer - that's gotta be a positive!

I just decided I don't need no stinkin knees.  Just got home from a stellar 1 hour upper body and core workout at the gym.  Between the strength work and the pool I'll smoke the other 2 when I'm back.  The extra workouts really help me mentally with the fact that I'm still sidelined.  I read somewhere "core work is free speed".  Also thanks Bobby because I found a machine that really works the hips and glutes.  That should speed up my recovery time.  Hitting the hammys and calves also to balance everything out.

ETA: For anyone keeping track I hit 195 today on the scale  Pretty soon I'll look like Ally McBeal Tongue out (please take that as a joke)

Awesome on all fronts Ally!  I am chasing behind you at 199. I don't think I have been under 200lbs since high school. Remember that injury is an opportunity to find another cross training exercise that won't hurt the injury.

Hey Ally and Alex - Nice work and welcome back to one-derland!  Must be all that spinach you eat for breakfast... I've got my eye on 180 - and have made it my goal to get there by the end of the month... You guys are my inspiration.

I took an extended leave of absence.  Still nursing my hip.  Feels a lot like arthritis/chronic annoying pain.  Got back out this morning for a jog warm up and some easy sprints.  threw some push ups and sit ups in.  I just wanted to get a workout in.  I woke up before 7:00 the first time in a long time.  Felt good.  Tomorrow, I'm hoping to get a ride in, if the weather is warm enough.  No marathons or HIM's planned anytime soon, I'm just going to tri to maintain a good base in all 3 and throw in some strength training as well.

Will the BDAS let me back in?

welcome back Kevin. Good idea to chill a little on the hip and mix things up. I am pretty much doing the same.

Crossfit continues to go well. I am impressed that it is not totally killing me. Training for a HIM has really gotten me in pretty good cardiovasular shape. I did jump rope for the first time in a year last night and it was fairly easy and much different than one year ago. Felt good. I am enjoying the total body workouts with less running mileage. (still running to/back from Crossfit to get in a little running).

Topic of the week - transitions.  There are a tons of facets that we could focus on - but lets start with this:

How and when do you practice your transitions?

Its always my goal to practice my transitions after my long workouts in the weeks before each tri with the goal of simulating making things happen when I am tired but I never seem to make that happen.  So, I usually practice the week before the race and I usually end up cursing myself for not starting sooner.

I had such a nice day triathlon-wise... Made it to the gym and decided that I just couldn't do another workout on the trainer.  So, I asked around and found a trail to run on that took me over to the local high school.  As I was running around the school trying to kill time before heading back to the gym - I discovered 125 acres of preserved land filled with amazing running paths.  So awesome. After the workout - I made it back to the gym and got in 800 in the pool.

To celebrate I enjoyed a burger at The Yardhouse and washed it all down with a Harpoon IPA and a Allagash White... Mmm. so good!

Tomorrow yoga and a recovery ride.

Its always my goal to practice my transitions after my long workouts.

I usually practiced them after a long ride/ short run brick, or a long swim/short ride brick.  I then did all 3 in the weeks leading up to the event in transition specific workouts.

This is great Bob.  I lost my jump rope, but think I'll find it before tomorrow and do a jump rope, push up/ sit up workout for tomorrow.  I think it'll still be pretty cool for a ride tomorrow morning, so I'm gonna stick with cross training.  My wife and I are going to get into the cross fit thing big time after delivery of #3 in June.  She was going to a class 2x a week, and she lost big time weight doing that last year.  I'm looking forward to jumping on the band wagon so we can do more workouts together instead of always going solo all the time.  She never really got into running 18 miles.  geeshh.  I think I could get into the crossfit thing however.

I am happy with what Crossfit is doing for my hip flexors, glutes and core. These are my neglected areas.

Transitions. I practice them during the race after I swim and bike.

I do draw a picture of how I want things set up as well as my check list. I put this in a zip lock bag and use it to set things up exactly as I need to race morning.

Well poopie flavored lolly pops.  The weather is horrible and pool is closed.  Can't do strength since I did that yesterday.  Guess it's a perfect day to use for a rest day.  My body can probably use it anyways.  I'll just push my workouts back one day and be back on track come Monday.

Do I keep my doctor appointment for Tuesday?  My knees don't hurt but every so often I think they are tender but not quite sure.  The main thing he's checking for is to see if it's still swollen.  Also the new issue I was going to ask him about.  I think it was from overuse on the bike and from supporting all my weight when I was off the other one.  The tightness and pain is all but gone.  I still have a full week left before the appointment but I'm kind of scared to go in.  Do I push it back one more week or am I just scared he may say no running?  I could use some advise on this since I would need to call and cancel before it gets any closer. HELP!!! Surprised

Provided it isn't going to cost a fortune, go ahead with it.  The doctor may spot an issue, or may tell you it's nothing, or over-use, or something along those lines.  Any time I have had a strain or other issues, I always make sure to rest at least a few days beyond when it feels 100%, to ensure that I don't make it any worse.  Better to know now, and spend a few days off, then to make it worse and spend a few months off.

I think you should keep the appointment.  Here's why:

If your knee is fine - He will tell you and you will feel a lot less concerned
If your knee is fine but he worries that you might reinjure it - he can tell you what and what not to do to avoid future injury.
If your knee isn't fine, he can tell you what you can do to get better and he can also give you a sense of what you can do in the interim to stay in shape.

Plus - you might be a good boy and get a lollipop (beer flavored of course!)
