Pre-race routine:

Hit the continental breakfast at the hotel - loaded up on cereal and muffins. Drove to the race.

Rode for about ten minutes, ran for about five. Stretched while waiting for pre-race meeting.

Bike - Run - Swim event

Fast (for me) transition from the run. Took off belt, sunglasses and hat prior to transition area, took off shoes and socks at my towel, put on noseclip and goggles during fastwalk into natatorium

Into building, down the steps, across the deck (fast walk), feet first entry and kickoff in first pool.

First 200 meters completed, exited first pool, then feet first entry into second pool. Second pool colder and deeper.

Maintained steady enough pass. Actually had to jockey for position a few times (actually felt like I was competing as opposed to just "swimming.")

Bike - Run - Swim

Race started with a 100yd (approx.) run to the starting line where we mounted our bikes and took off.

Course was mixed terrain with pavement, hard pack with gravel, and deep sand. Kept a good pace entering the deep sand, keeping dismounts to a minimum. Had to fight for position in the pack a few times. Course very non-technical. Saw a few cyclocross bikes on the course.

Bike to run transition

Jumped off moving bike. I racked the bike, pulled off my helmet & camelbak, grabbed my running cap and took off running.

Wearing my running shoes (mtn bike still has cages) and not wearing dew rag, or gloves made for faster transition
Run
  • 32m 30s
  • 3.11 miles

Comments:

Felt a little drained, but concentrated on form. Run wasn't my best, but still alright.
Post race
Warm down:

Waited for my wife to finish. Skipped post-race activities, went back to the hotel and cleaned up.

Event comments:

An excellent course for beginners with a mountain bike: the course is non-technical, it is also a small race with only about 100 or so competitors.

For the more experienced triathlete, its a fast course ('nuff said.)

The pool swim finish is also refreshing.
