Per http://www.kdwpt.state.ks.us/news/Fishing/Fishing-Reports/Region-2

"Water level May 9 was 3.68 feet low, release rate = 21 cfs, temperature = 57 F."

I too am not concerned...it'll be fine for the race, but it is a fun topic to watch/discuss.

Excellent!  Not a fan of a duathlon or 500 meter swim for an olympic distance.

kchawknut - 2013-05-08 2:11 PM I'm hoping this doesn't happen, as the swim is actually one of my strengths, but has anyone ever been a part of a tri converted to a du on race day?  When would you guess they make that call?

In 2010 they changed the Heritage Park tri to a duathlon due to the cold air temps (50s and rain) and likely coldish water. They announced the change the day before.

I thought the swim could've still happened and I was little upset. I would never sign up for a duathlon on purpose. I'll take a swim, even if it's a shortened one.

Should be a somewhat large group swimming around 9:00am, so we may see you there. I think we are meeting at the actual swim beach, not the swim start.  We are riding after.

This race has just crept up on me.  Running a Half Marathon tomorrow, guess I should ride the course at least once....or not.  Anyone riding the course Sunday?  Guess if I just show up they'll be people out there for sure.

Reece, I was going to offer to meet you, but that is Mother's Day and I don't know how or when I will be able to break away for a ride.  But you have ridden the 5150 course a bunch of times -- it will just be without a couple of the most difficult stretches.

Well now that water Temp. isn't much of an issue.  What is the policy on thunderstorms and bad weather?

I swam for about 30 minutes this afternoon at the swim beach at Clinton. I wore a full sleeve wetsuit and two swim caps. My feet were a bit cold but it was otherwise an uneventful swim and completely bearable. I say temperatures will not be an issue next Sunday.

I did an open water swim today too. It wasn't at Clinton or Longview, but after the initial rush of cold, it wasn't bad.  I wore a sleeveless wetsuit.  I too don't see water temps being an issue.

Bummer, one of the VERY few questions they answered on the facebook page was that you don't have assigned transition spots.  It's first come, first serve.  Seems silly to have such a free for all, but whatever.

Ugh.  This is what you get when two races have a match a resources run low.  The only guaranteed loser is the triathlete paying the fees.

Well now that water Temp. isn't much of an issue.  What is the policy on thunderstorms and bad weather?

I found this:

USA TRIATHLON RACE CONTINGENCY PLAN  Version 2 3/6/2006

"...The NCAA and NSSL strongly recommend terminating activity when the lightening is six miles away...The (flash bang) method states that one should begin counting on the lightning flash and one should stop counting when the associated clap of thunder is heard. Then divide the time to thunder (in seconds) by 5 to determine the distance (in miles) to the lightning flash.

For example, an observer obtains a count of 30 seconds from the time he spots the flash to when the thunder is heard. Thus, that lightning flash was 6 miles from the observer. The 30 second flash-to-bang count is recommended as the shortest allowable time to consider resumption of activity. As the count approaches 30 all activities should be postponed and all persons should be seeking a safe location. One other recommendation is that one uses the 30-30 rule. This rule states that if an event is suspended due to the 30 second flash-to-bang method, one should wait at least 30 minutes from the sound of the most recent thunder to resume activities."

This way, if there is lightning Sunday, I thought I would count out loud, and then tell the person I'm standing next to I'm using the "flash-to-bang" method because I went to meteorological school.

Gotta thing the weather won't be a factor, I mean typically the storms build all day and then hit in the afternoon....knock on wood.

Lots of little changes here at the last minute for this race. At this rate, I'm 90% sure it will end up being a 2.5k mud/color/fun run.

I'm mainly kidding, but wave times and now they are not doing athlete bracelets. I realize that neither of these things matter at all, I just find it funny when a race has been planned for months and suddenly at the end there is a flurry of activity/changes.

Maybe there is more competition between 5150 and the KC tri than we even thought? Sounds like 5150 is trying to match KC's rapid fire last minute changes (warm up/no warm up, wave times, bike racking, etc). Maybe they are competing to see who can *look* the most disorganized but still pull off a great race?? Next thing you know 5150 will send out a last minute "**almost** sold out message!

Saw on facebook that someone picked up packet and got a bracelet, but the number on it did not match her race belt, bike number, etc.

I offer this story without commentary....
