Subject: trying to create a spreadsheet

I'm leaning toward an Iphone and wondering if anyone is familiar with their available spreadsheet apps. I want to create a spreadsheet for a building I own

16 lines- one for each tenant

each tenant would be from my contacts

Column A for rent owed, then a Column B for rent received which would obviously deduct from Col A.      Col B would record date received and then also fill in the Monthly Income Column

Similar rows/columns for expenses

Ideally how I'd like it to work is I click on a and update Contact Smith's "folder' for x$ received and would automatically update the spreadsheet. And ideal if in that Contact I  can add a task  to follow up w Contact Smith (Smith doesn't pay full rent but will pay balance on 2/10).  So maybe my spreadsheet doesn't have to be too complicated but maybe my contacts software needs to be?

Any ideas? I'm not 100% committed to Apple. I currently own a Blackberry and might stay there if it proves to be easier. Thanks

So you want a mobile phone recommendation or help building a SS?

You'll have to pick which platform is going to do the majority of your tasks well, then tailor the SS creation to the platform.

Spreadsheets are not really designed to work on mobile phone OS.  You might want to look at an app that can do this stuff for you, or write one yourself.

This is all just my opinion, but since you are changing mobile platforms so to speak, you may want to consider the nexus line of products for various reasons. I say that because a couple of the suggestions I have are going to be google products and the functions are much smoother on google's android the way it was meant to be. As far as your spreadsheet goes you can download/export all your contacts into an excel format and then you use the "lookup" function to reference your contacts on a separate worksheet. If you want to do that you may need Docs To Go or you may want to look at MS Office 360 which is a new cloud based document rendering service they have. I know docs to go can be done on iPhone but office 360 is a ways off yet, not sure about nexus. Now the reason I mention nexus is that google provides google spreadsheets in it's drive app. These spreadsheets are basic but they are free and very handy and can do half of what you want with very little effort. The lookup function for contacts might take some programming to get, but you can alter google docs with developer codes which is nice. If you know how to do this then google docs is your best bet. Google docs works very well on apple but even better on nexus. Keep in mind that there are apps out there specifically for tracking rent and you can find them on both platforms. Rent tracker is on iPhone and landlord is on both.

How do you edit excel on your phone from Dropbox? I've got a couple files that I store in Dropbox and I've never been able to figure out how to edit on my phone. I've only been able to view them. Would be helpful to know.

duh, the Apple App store has quite a few existing apps that should suffice, including the Rent Tracker and the Property Log Book. Thanks for the advice- I will look at the Nexus and Google stuff as well, but this is a great start!

to answer someone's question- I was NOT looking for advice on which phone to buy. More like I was looking for some advice and/or reviews of SS's or other apps that COJ peeps may have used or known of...

Ran across this today:  http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/microsoft-office-2013-which-version-is-right-for-you/

I suspect you've already made up your mind on what you want to do, but they did just release office 365 and if the spreadsheet is the direction you want to go then you may want to read above.  The apps still seem the easiest way to me, but I figured I'd post this anyway just in case.  I haven't been able to decipher whether they have office for iOS or not.  in the article it says they do, but in a different article it says they don't but it will be coming, so I don't know.  Obviously it is designed to work better with a windows mobile OS than android or iOS, but take that for whatever it's worth.

Maybe not the answer you want, but you could buy an ultrabook and have a very light and powerful computer. My Sony weights 2lbs and I take it everywhere. I hardly ever use the iPad anymore.

Otherwise for an iPhone, Documents to Go and Google Docs works wonders.

I will definitely read this article before any big decision. Truth is, I was definitely over-thinking this. I am going to try RentTracker, which I think will do the trick. As for the laptop, Ipad mini ideas- I don't think that's where I want to go, but thanks.
