pitt83 - 2013-02-18 2:31 PM Even Chris Christie supports the idea of reducing the number of guns as a way to curb violence! The meltdown jewelry is a fantastic reminder of what needs to be done.

There are more guns now than at any other time in the history of this country....and violent crime is at a 20 year low.

The FACTS are.......more guns and less crime.  Those are the numbers.  How anyone can come to a conclusion from those numbers that reducing guns will reduce crime is beyond me.  The FACT is, 20 years ago we ALOT fewer guns and more crime.

Let go of the emotion.

I always have a problem with statistics that are used to "prove" a point. I remember when Rudolph Giuliani took over as mayor in New York, and about 10 minutes later was declaring to the world that the crime numbers have sunk like a stone. And he proved it, with statistics.... Laughing

Yeah, Ok....except for the fact that number of murders per year is a known, along with  the number of guns being bought

I might have a better time agreeing with you if not for the FACT that the number of murders has been declining for 20 years.  It is also a FACT that there are more guns in the hands of provate citizens than at any other time in history.

I didn't say that more guns had led to fewer murders....I have no idea if that's the reason or not.  But one thing is for sure, more guns hasn't let to more murders.....and that's a statistic that you just can't conjur up.

Again, here are the facts....lowest murder/violent crime rate in 20 years, more guns than ever.

Again......emotion fuels the anti-gun side....period.

Emotion rather than facts is fueling you as well.  It is a fact that the reduction of environmental lead ( primarily from it's removal from gasoline ) correlates much more closely with the reduction in violent crime than the increased number of guns.

NOWHERE did I say that the reduction in crime was due to more guns.  What I said is that more guns hasn't made violent crime go up......you can't argue that....it just hasn't.

I'm not saying that they cause crime to go up.  I'm saying they are pretty much irrelevant to overall crime rates, thus a reduction in guns will not cause an adverse change in overall violent crime rates.  I may be reading you wrong, but your emphasis on the "FACTS" of crime rates to gun ownership rates seems to imply that you think reducing gun ownership will cause an increase in crime rates.

No, sorry if I'm not clear....I can type faster than my brain can work.  We agree.  A reduction of guns will do nothing to help the crime rate one way or another.

People commit crimes.....reduce the nunmber of violent people walking around and you reduce the number of violent crimes.

I think there are enough guns to fuel as much violence as society is willing to put up with...it's no longer a limiting factor in the United States.

There are more guns than ever......and less violent crime.  I guess society has decided it won't put up with any more violent crime than it already has?   People commit crimes......it's a simple concept.  Guns don't make criminals.

For anyone who is in a high dust and/or area where submersion of one's firearm is a distinct possibility that's a good idea!

I think I remember my dad telling me that they put condoms over the ends of their guns to help keep water out in Vietnam.

The huge rise in gun ownership has to do with law-abiding people buying guns....so who cares how many there are?  The chances of one of those guns being used in a crime are very slim.

Are there 2 manufacturing lines at the smith & wesson plant?  One for guns that go to law-abiding people and one for guns that go to criminals?  The chances of one of those guns being used in a crime is 100% in the sense that it entered this world as a 'legal' gun.

You need to rephrase this.  As you have written it, you say that the chances that a gun will be used in a crime is 100%.  That is not true, because not all guns will be used in a crime.  Therefore, the chances that a gun will be used in a crime is not 100%.

And if we hypothetically returned to the root causes of that murderous period 20-30 years ago (the rise of crack cocaine) with more guns now floating around than ever before, what do you think would happen?

Right, because the rise of meth in the last 10 years is completely different. Meth use has exploded, it's cheaper and easier to make your self.. why have we not seen a continuation of the crime started by crack 20-30 years ago?
