Pre-race routine:

I didn't get to bed until 1:30 or so because I was all wound up from the Kentucky-Missouri game that went to overtime. So it really sucked when the alarm went off at 6AM.
Event warmup:

I sat in the transition area reading The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James. I also managed to swim about 2 laps before the race started.
Swim
  • 19m 2s
  • 1094 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

Ugh. More than 20 seconds slower than last month. I can't swim anymore. It didn't help I was swimming in the same lane as the guy who won the swim split. I think he passed me every lap.
What would you do differently?:

Train for swimming.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Transition time included in run time. I have no idea why I didn't have a sense of urgency but I lollygagged through this. My mind was going "Hurry Hurry Hurry" and my body was all "Listen asshole you just made me swim for 1000 yards with zero swim training in the last 3 1/2 weeks and now you want me to go out in below freezing weather to run a 5K while soaking wet? Yea you can go to hell"
What would you do differently?:

HURRY UP!
Run
  • 27m 14s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Time includes transition. I thought this went much better than last month as the path wasn't covered in snow and black ice. I did have to stop and walk 10 seconds about halfway through to get my heart settled down (I really hate the swim - run transition) but if you take away my slower than molasses transition time I probably averaged about 7:45 per mile.
What would you do differently?:

I need to just get out the door faster after the swim. Less worrying about keeping warm will lead to more suffering, but the time will go down.
Post race
Warm down:

Hit the showers then hit the cookies. MMMMMMMM COOKIES.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of swim training. No sense of urgency in transition.

Event comments:

Can't beat $10
