Azalea Triathlon - TriathlonSprint

Wilmington, North Carolina
United States
Set Up Events
55F / 13C
Sunny
Total Time = 00m
Overall Rank = 401/423
Age Group = 55 - 59
Age Group Rank = 18/23
Pre-race routine:

Did not do a good job this time due to time pressures. Drove down the night before and stayed with the daughter and son-in-law and just did not prepare properly in advance, and/or allow enough time to get to the race site in time to warmup, get situated, etc.
Event warmup:

Virtually none. I walked into the pool arena, stood there literally for 3 minutes and one of the volunteers appeoached me and said you're up - go to the head of the line.
Swim
  • 04m 1s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

I am shocked at the swim time and find it extremely hard to believe the 4:01 time. Overall rank was 13th out of 423, again I'm not sure what occurred but I believe this was in error.
Transition 1
  • 03m 14s
Comments:

11 out of 23 for the AG ... 290 overall. I might have shaved 20 secnds off via running through transition and pulling on the helmet last second. Also, no socks used for the bike shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Run a little faster thru transition both headed in and out.
Bike
  • 30m 35s
  • 10 miles
  • 19.62 mile/hr
Comments:

Rough surfaces through the residential neighborhood parts ... a lot of pot holes, gouges, erosion, etc.
What would you do differently?:

Train more - earlier to get faster.
Transition 2
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

Had trouble right at the last with getting my feet out of my bike shoes. I mistakenly grabbed road bike shoes instead of the tri shoes with packing up. The tri shoes have one strap with a notch to keep the strap from re-engaging in the velcro and are very easy to get your feet out of.
What would you do differently?:

Bring the tri shoes next time making it easier to get feet out of the shoes and on top.
Run
  • 42m 50s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 13m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

I started out with a cramp in my right calf. I had to walk some from the start; stop and stretch a bit in order to work the cramp out. This limited my pace at the start ... still as best it may have impacted the overall time by only 1-2 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Keep training and spending more time with the run. It's my weakest leg of the three.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a few orange slices and water. I took the time to congratulate a 64 year old lady who ran together with me most of the way ... it was her first EVER tri.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The run leg ... pure and simple

Event comments:

I always enjoy this event. It is well run, well supported and one of the RD 'Hope' helped me with some start changes due to a family situation.

Congrats!!! Bummer on the run but it happens.  Great swim time!  If that time is true you are quite the fish!

Congrats on a solid race! Yeah, leg cramps suck.

How cool that a 64 year just did their first tri! In NOLA 69.1 (swim cancelled), I got passed on the run by a guy with 60 something on his calf. I said great race and was really inspired that maybe I can do this for 20 more years.
