New user 36 |  Subject: Flat TiresJust curious how often does everyone get flat tires? and how many tubes do you take on the longer training rides.
I train just outside of Toronto, (Milton) and in the past week I have had 4 flats, I have even switched my tires. I normally carry 1 tube, and on long rides over 100km carry 2. 100k bike this morning went through 2 tubes in my first 15km.
* I check my pressure before every ride, and ensure correct PSI. I have replace the tire itself. Is this just bad luck |

Pro 5361 | Subject: RE: Flat Tires I carry 1 tube. A patch kit (Park GP2) and 2 CO2. Sometimes I'll also carry a little pump. I have had two flats in a ride (which is where the patch kit comes in), although that's only happened once. I'll sometimes go 1000 miles or more without a flat, then when I start getting them in succession, know it's time to change my tires. Or, like this week. New tires- but I picked up a thumb tack and poooooofff. Hey - it happens. Sometimes you just run over things. Part of the sport. |

| 96 | Subject: RE: Flat Tires Often, two flats in succession in the same wheel means something made its way through the tire. I always carefully check the tire to find the cause of the flat before reassembling the wheel. I've picked pebbles, wires, bits of glass, and all kinds of things out of the tire. I used to get a lot of flats - maybe one every 100 miles - but I went to Kevlar tires (Armadillos) and now they are much less frequent. Maybe every 500 miles. |

Whenever I flat, I always run my fingers inside my tire to check for anything that might have poked a hole in the tube. |

Member 1004 | Subject: RE: Flat Tires Where is the hole? You should be able to get an idea of what the problem is from the location of the hole. i.e. is it always on the rim side, is it a double hole, etc. |

Checked the tubes, and all holes are on the outside (opposite of the valve) so the roads are crap lately and bad luck.
None are snake bites |

None are snake bites Is it directly opposite (top of tube) or on the side? Odds are the something sharp between the tire and tube somewhere in there if it's on top. Odds are you keep pinch flatting if it's on the side. |

Buddy of mine suggests carrying a cotten ball or two to wipe the inside of the tire. Most likely will pick up anything that poked the hole. May save a finger from gettin poked too. Weighs nothing and takes up no space. |

You can run it down the center of the rim tape as well with the same result. |

I've been riding for 12 or so years and most of those rides are in the Milton area and I've only ever had one flat (three if you count leaking valves). Before every ride I always pump my tires to 110 psi, watch where I ride and I use a different set of tubes and tires for the trainer/rollers.
