It was meant to spur discussion. Some question might be, are we changing traditional triathlon venues to allow more participation? Do we not have enought people to fill the venue so we need to add variations to the triathlon race? What if you just want to run a 10k. Or just want to swim or bike. Should be have provisions for that? Should we allow people to swim-bike only, bike-run only, swim-run only? What about run-bike-run? Is there simply not enough interest in Aquabikes to justify their own race event?
Traditional triathlon venues have had aquabikes/aquathlons for a while, nothing new. Some races might not be making enough money on just triathlons so an aquabike helps them over the edge. Other RD's might just realize that they can make more revenue with little extra cost by holding other races at the event. If you're not WTC and maxing out the course capacity why not hold other events? You've already paid for the police presence/closed roads/other high fixed costs. I'd be expecting to see more of the possible swim-bike-run combinations at "triathlon-headlined" events. Think of it this way, more participants of any variety will keep your entry fee lower. |

Re all the "it's nothing new" posts.....it's new to ME. My local tri has been a triathlon venue for 20 years and now they are offering aquabiking. So it may not be new to you but it is new to me. Maybe I should surf the Internet more or live in a bigger city and I'd be up to date on all the latest changes in the multi sports world. |

Yes, this is MY local tri in MY home town in MY state and in MY country! Do you really have an issue with possessive pronouns or are you just looking to sling some sh**?

Veteran 348 Houston, TX | Subject: RE: Aquabike? datlas - 2013-05-06 9:54 AM On the one hand it does seem a little silly for tri-wannabees. OTOH I suspect there are plenty of folks out there whose knees do not allow them to run, so this is an option. Personally, I say go big (all 3 events) or go home. What's up with the "team" thing where you have 3 people, each one does one of the events? Relays are a good way to introduce people into the sport. Then once they are out there, they see all the excitement and decide that they want to do the whole thing on their own. Relays start last and are scored seperately, so it won't effect me any. |
