Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission

Overcast
Total Time = 1h 06m 29s
Overall Rank = 23/151
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 4/20
Pre-race routine:

Coffee and some oatmeal at the house. Drove down to the race and had some coconut water, 4 anti-fatigue pills, and a gu.
Event warmup:

Setup, body marked, porta-potty and then an easy 4 mile bike, got the wet suit on and headed to the corral.
Swim
  • 09m 14s
  • 600 yards
  • 01m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

I recently figure out the glide in my stroke. I still wasn't confident so I started in the back so I wouldn't get runover. I came out harder than I had planned on and by the time I hit the buoy for the first right I looked around and realized I was in 4th on the swim. My sighting was dead on and my pull was strong. I kept the pace and finished as hard as I could. I was completely anaerobic at the end of the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Suit stuck on heels just a bit and I forgot my T1/T2 mat so my feet weren't able to be dried off. Overall this was one of my fastest T1's at the charleston series. I think getting to the race at 0600 and setting up on rack 11 really made a big difference.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 33m 3s
  • 12 miles
  • 21.79 mile/hr
Comments:

Took about 3 mile to really get the body working and then played leap frog with a couple guys until mile 7 where the dusted me. I pushed all out for as long as possible and finished with a solid bike split.
What would you do differently?:

I was a little worried about thunderstorms and wind so I didn't ride the disc and went with front and rear trispokes. I should have brought out the disc, winds were mild and only head and tailwind.
Transition 2
  • 00m 42s
Comments:

I went with newton distance show as I felt a high left ankle sprain all week. It took a bit longer to throw on socks and get the newtons on. I did buy yanks and put them on the newtons the night before and that really payed off. Again, this time was on par with all my other charleston series races, mostly due to rack selection.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 21m 56s
  • 5 kms
  • 13m 41s  min/km
Comments:

I picked up the run and didn't feel my legs for the first .5 miles but knew my pace was strong. At each aid station I dumped a cup of water on myself and then drank most of the cup and then dumped the remainder on me too. I stopped and walked the aid stations. I passed my biggest rival at .5 miles and he closed me down at 2.25 miles. The next .5 he used me as a wind shield as he set up drafting. We rounded the corner and headed to the finish line and he made a move, so I went with him. I though of Macca's book and the mental part of triathlon and made a quick sprint to open up 15 yards with .2 to go. He countered and closed the gap. So with .1 to go I opened up an all out sprint and beat him by 3 seconds. Even though I finished 4th in age I beat the guy that consistently destroyed me last year.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

I completely fell down and got met by the wife and kids. We had some snacks as we waited for my shipmate to come through. He looked like he was hurting so I ran the last 2.1 miles next to him pushing his pace to 8:30/mile which was :50 more than normal pace. He finished the race in 1:29:change but made his goal of finishing sub 90 minutes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing this is my charleston tri series PR by 1:15. I need to keep the swim up and get my bike back into the 22-23 mph times.

Event comments:

Fantastic start to the series.

This past spring I realized a few of us were heading in the wrong direction physically. We were getting together for poker games and kids’ birthdays, but that was it.

I'm not quite half way into my IM training. I just raced a sprint and on Monday I woke up and felt like I'd been drugged! Not sore, just incredibly fatigued.

If you haven’t done any bricks yet, this isn’t the time to start piling them on, but here are some examples you could do in the lead up to your race.
