Pre-race routine:

This race is nearby so up at 5:30 am, quick coffee and toast and ready to go.
Event warmup:

This is a pool swim and they let you warm up in the pool which is great - swam a few laps
Swim
  • 07m 42s
  • 383 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

Put down a realistic finish time for estimating start which ended me up behind some slower swimmers who over estimated, a real problem in the pool as you need to pass them and then get under the lane line, a fair swim, only improved by about .15 over last year
What would you do differently?:

flip turns would help in a pool swim but never perfected them
Transition 1
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

no issues, pretty good transition,
Bike
  • 32m 40s
  • 11.2 miles
  • 20.57 mile/hr
Comments:

expected to pick up time on the bike but the weather did not cooperate, also missed one turn and had to double back, road was really slick and there were a lot of turns, just did not want to risk a wipe out, where I could go all out the Tri bike made a big difference, can't wait to see how the bike works on a dry day race
Transition 2
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

struggled getting the helmet off
Run
  • 22m 22s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

struggled with the Garmin getting a signal so had no pace time on the run, run felt good, had a good kick at the end, could have probably paced slightly faster
What would you do differently?:

need to get the Garmin on track before running
Post race
Warm down:

found the family, waited for awards

What limited your ability to perform faster:

the rain was the biggest limiting factor

Event comments:

Overall good result considering the weather, I wanted a 1:03:xx (after being 1:08 last year) and ended up at 1:04 - 4 minutes better than last year, 3rd in AG and 18th overall out of 285 so not bad, 50-54 was really competitive with 1st and 2nd in AG under 1 hour (same 2 guys as last year), did not pick up enough on the swim, bike was slightly better which was fine considering the weather, picked up 2:30 on the run over last year which helped

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

I don't really strength train (because I never have and don't really know much about it) and feel like my lack of upper body strength is the reason why I'm not getting faster.
