Pre-race routine:

this race turned in to me just trying to be a rabbit for Trudy. I didn't train like I wanted to, some of it out of my control, most of it not. I need to man up and find a way to be more committed to my workouts, that's the bottom line.
Event warmup:

escorted Trudy the afternoon before the race on his first OWS. It was good for me as well cause the water was cold and it was good to get used to it and make sure the wet suit still fit! some white caps during this swim, little did we know race morning it would be full on white caps.
warm up race morning was just a quick dip in the water before the short course waves started.
Swim
  • 12m 46s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

I have only swam in worse water one other time. first part of the swim was right into the waves, then we went across the waves then the last little bit was with the waves to finish. Not sure the time trial start did any good. Nobody went with the right group it seemed so quickly I was in traffic and seem to be in it the entire time. more contact than my last two wave starts. Lots of people had trouble with the waves to I felt, I took advantage and was more aggressive with my lines and the contact.
there was a lengthy climb up the boat ramp to transition which inflated the actual swim time.
What would you do differently?:

really just swim more, I was happy with the swim, probably need to focus on form a little more but considering the conditions, I was happy.
Transition 1
  • 03m 7s
Comments:

I planned to take my sweet time in transitions. with the lack of training I figured I would need a little time to get the heart/breathing under control.
Bike
  • 58m 48s
  • 17 miles
  • 17.30 mile/hr
Comments:

I biked about 22 miles this spring, and squeaked out 16mph on one of those rides, so to be north of 17mph I am happy. I felt like it could have been faster and it should have but then it comes back to you get what you train for. I was pretty nervous about the bike seeing how little I had biked. Not sure driving the course the night before helped, seemed like there were some big hills, but turned out there was probably only 2 real significant hills and I really enjoyed the ride. somehow the wind only seemed to be a head wind on a large downhill so it never seemed that bad.
Transition 2
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

no rush, I have no desire to get to the run any sooner than I need to :)
Run
  • 37m 30s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 12m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

about what I expected, wanted to be under 12/miles but didn't get it. needed to walk more than I wanted. A couple early on to get breathing right and also had to stop to get some sticks out of my shoe that I think Trudy put in there during transition. Trudy finally reeled me in at about a min into the run when I was feeling the best. Stayed in contact with him to the turn around but had nothing left at that point. was thankful for the 58 degrees and overcast.
What would you do differently?:

am I a broken record yet, train more. I think I did one 2 mile run in the last month...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

take a guess

Event comments:

Nice race, not the most organized at the beginning I felt, but certainly not a got rodeo by any means. No finisher medals, which I didn't care about but its promoted as a 1st timer friendly race, I think they would like a medal for their first race.
Really proud of Trudy,, he killed his first tri and didn't let a nasty swim get to him. Hope he is hooked now!

Soon after I got married, I decided I needed to get motivated to work out and focus on getting back into shape. I could barely jog a quarter-mile without needing a walk break.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

You can spend a small fortune on these pre-wrapped bundles of energy, thinking they offer magic ingredients-not true. “Energy” simply means “provides calories” and not “will make you feel energetic."

Energy bars and fluid replacement drinks have their place – and will surely be the subject of future reviews – but there is nothing quite like the immediate lift an energy gel can provide.
