Stone Harbor, New Jersey
United States
88F / 31C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 11m 27s
Overall Rank = 137/373
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 29/59
Pre-race routine:

wasn't able to eat/drink too much but got a Clif bar from TRIBMAC and had some H20

I think this really came back to haunt me - i usually have a bagel, some fruit and some coffee that gives me a little kick
Event warmup:

nothing
Swim
  • 07m 54s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

this year I've been placed in later waves due to age-group change (M40-44) and it seems to be MUCH MORE chaotic due to additional swimmers

What would you do differently?:

not much
Transition 1
  • 01m 42s
Bike
  • 34m 8s
  • 11.4 miles
  • 20.04 mile/hr
Comments:

good pace but when I started I went to put my computer view on cadence and hit the wrong button and blanked out everything!

I couldn't tell how fast I was going or what my cadence was for the entire race!

sucks because I shoot for a specific speed sometimes (lets me know if I should be pushing it harder) and I've been keeping track of cadence to adjust gears and not mash too much!
What would you do differently?:

set my computer for cadence when i rack my bike - not sure if it automatically will reset to actual time when it goes to sleep
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
What would you do differently?:

not much
Run
  • 26m 20s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

HORRIBLE! I guess this is where the alcohol from the night before hurts you - i think I was very dehydrated - my previous TRI runs this year have been around 24 minutes - I just hit a wall and I guess it was due to the heat and the night before and I think if I had eaten something more in the morning and drank my routine coffee things might have been a little different
What would you do differently?:

not drink the night before - I kind of had to though - very special occasion and lots of family in town that I don't get to see that often
Post race
Warm down:

drank alot of fluid and walked it off

What limited your ability to perform faster:

pre-race alcohol consumption, hydration and pre-race meal

Those pre-race cocktails can catch up to you, huh?

Still, looks like a nice race overall--I'm betting that run was pretty hot.

You forgot to mention that is was way too freakin hot to run a fast 5k!  Considering you didn't eat or drink enough, you did pretty damn good.  Next year, no more beer, and eat something more than a clif bar!!

oh and I totally forgot about the pebble I got in my shoe - probably only added about thirty seconds to my time when i had to stop at the run turnaround and remove my shoe to find it - still just added to a disappointing run!

Wasn't the swim crazy???? It was so condensed and crowded. I felt like I was constantly bumping into people and having people bump into me.

Nice job; Stone Harbor and Avalon are great races - missed them this year because my in-law vacation just didn't coincide. I laughed my a$$ off about drinking the night before because my wife had to drag me off the deck at like 10:30 before the Avalon race last year so I wouldn't be hung for the race. Looks like you had decent performances all around; way to go!
