Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 32m 40s
Overall Rank = 132/709
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 21/62
Pre-race routine:

TORRENTIAL rain in early AM. Ate 1/2-bowl of Fruit Cheerios. Took bike off of rack and placed in back of Explorer. Upon parking, climbed in back of Explorer and placed water bottles, inflated tires, finished filling bag, put on rain gear. Walked to transition area. Sat around waiting out the rain. Ate 1/2-banana and PB sandwich.
Event warmup:

Soley consisted of arm/rotator cuff stretch/warm-up.
Swim
  • 08m 6s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim went well. I took it "easy" since it was my 1st and I didn't want to overdo it. Slightly faster than I expected. Water was a little choppy, but not bad.
What would you do differently?:

Less breast stroke for sighting (use FC w/head up), faster into/out of water.
Transition 1
  • 03m 2s
Comments:

Took my time. Shirt briefly got hung up on shouders.
What would you do differently?:

A little quicker overall; tri shirt.
Bike
  • 55m 45s
  • 16.7 miles
  • 17.92 mile/hr
Comments:

Terrible on bike. Uphills were bad. Anyone I was set up to pass realatively easily on flats or downhills either maintained lead on uphills or extended. I gave the field a free 10min on this one. I AM A BAD CYCLIST (right now). Turns out the distance was 16.7mi, not 15. This increases my pace to 18mph which is what I was aiming for. Turns out, I need to aim significantly higher.
What would you do differently?:

Get your ass in biking shape!
Transition 2
  • 02m 16s
Comments:

Took a little extra time to make sure I was set.
What would you do differently?:

Slightly quicker transition.
Run
  • 23m 32s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Did a good job. The run may have been a little longer than 3.1 which would have increased my avg pace. Toward the end, when I was passing some people I thought could keep up, I encouraged them to not let me do that. One guy tried to keep up but I think we were still too far from the finish for him to maintain. In the last 1/4-mile I was passing a gal and got her to keep up to the finish. It was fun.
What would you do differently?:

Could possibly pick up pace slightly.
Post race
Warm down:

Some stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Too little sleep and likely tired legs. Also, I'm a crappy cyclist.

Event comments:

Overall, satisfied with 1st race. Clearly need significant work on cycling. Shaving 5min off the ride would have moved me up 60+ slots overall. Can't complain about 21/62 division and 132/709 overall.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

With a hectic schedule and the desire to throw in other forms of exercise, I went from following one of the training programs to doing my own. Would it be better to follow a training plan?

Should I have time goals for the first sprint? Should I just finish the race at a reasonable pace? I'm not sure how to approach this.
