First OWS in 5 years + new wetsuit = very rough first 1/2 mile!!

Struggled badly for the first 1/2 mile. Could not get a full breath and ended up on my back multiple times and treading water about 3 times. In the years past when I was racing I never experienced anything like it.... Almost grabbed a kayak to DNF, but eventually snapped out of it and got a bit of a rhythm going. Finally felt somewhat normal for the last 3/4 of a mile.
Glad I did the swim simply because of the future knowledge I'll gain from it.
My time was 12 minutes slower than when I did it in 2008.
What would you do differently?:

Pretty obvious I should've done a few OWS's in the new wetsuit prior to today. :)

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

Most of those thinking about tackling a long swim instinctively feel it’s necessary to Do much to build endurance - more yards, harder laps. But a focus on Receiving is ideal for long distances.

The Elite wetsuit was redesigned four times before going to the market in order to maximize its benefits. Does all this speed come at the expense of comfort? I had to find out.

The schedule consists of at least 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work too. Most weeks have 4 days of cycling. The maximum volume is 14 hours in week 5.

Enter the new TYR X-Sight goggles. The X-Sights have been designed with a flexible nose bridge that (surprise, surprise) is shaped like an “X”.
