Culpeper Sprint Triathlon - Triathlon

View Member's Race Log View other race reports
Culpeper, Virginia
United States
Set Up Events
80F / 27C
Total Time = 2h 07m 8s
Overall Rank = 274/343
Age Group = 31-34
Age Group Rank = 14/19
Pre-race routine:

Banana and bagel at hotel before heading to the race site; typical routine of getting lost enroute (you would think I would learn by now)...
Event warmup:

  • 18m 19s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 26s / 100 meters

started more towards the back, but then got stuck in the pack - need to remember to start on the outside; googles fogged up about 1/2 way through; but was passing ppl in wave ahead of me
What would you do differently?:

goggle de-fogger; outside of pack
Transition 1
  • 02m 10s

my stuff got crowded out by someone else in the T1 area, so I have issues finding what had been laid out...
What would you do differently?:

get to the race a bit earlier to claim one of the end spots on the rack
  • 1h 07m 25s
  • 16 miles
  • 14.30 mile/hr

holy hills!
What would you do differently?:

not drop one of my water bottles mid-course....thankfully it was my water and not my gatorade; need to find some hills to train on
Transition 2
  • 02m 7s

see comments above about transition area and crowding...
What would you do differently?:

see above
  • 37m 9s
  • 5 kms
  • 07m 31s  min/km

walked too much at the beginning of the run...once I got going, I was fine, and the second half of the run, I ran the entire way...but my run was better than the last one in a sprint
What would you do differently?:

need to set distance goals of run/walk during the run - using road cones or something...might have helped
Post race
Warm down:

stretching, water, walking around

What limited your ability to perform faster:

didn't drink enough water prior to or during

Event comments:

Set-Up Events always does a great job with their races

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

Since I didn't have much time and since it's a super sprint, am I OK just go to at the training relatively hard through Thursday or even Friday?

Couch-to-sprint triathlon training programs to get you over the finish-line of your first triathlon.
