Age Group Rank = 24/30
Pre-race routine:

Woke at 5 am. Got going a little behind time. Got to race site at 6:45, 15 minutes before transition was to close. Got all set up in time.
Event warmup:

none
Swim
  • 32m 15s
  • 1300 meters
  • 02m 29s / 100 meters
Comments:

Felt good on swim. Comfortable. Positive self talk. No issues. water was a bit warm for a full suit.

Happy with time. Not a fast swimmer anyway. got up out of water at just under 30 mins. a bit better than average for me.

If I can keep this pace for IMFL I will be alright.
Transition 1
  • 03m 30s
Comments:

A bit too long in T-1. Couple minor things but 30-45 secs slower than I would like. I thin the sock thing on wet feet was the issue.
What would you do differently?:

not wear socks for bike
Bike
  • 1h 16m 47s
  • 26.3 miles
  • 20.69 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt solid on the bike. Worked on Cadence control and staying aero in aero helmet. Had good times passing people until caught up with the Baystate Tri crews. Played tag with a couple strong bikers. Hit some good speeds on the flats and rollers.
Transition 2
  • 03m 6s
Comments:

faster thanT-1 which usually isnt the case. Tying shoes instead of speed laces was a bit slower but what the hell I aint gonna be on the podium!
Run
  • 59m 9s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Had a tough belly cramp right off the bike. Wasnt sure I was going to shake it.Slow going at first getting that thing resolved. Didn't feel real stellar but just kept the feet moving. Legs a bit toasted after the bike and racing the sprint the day before.

Worked on getting under 3 hours. Made it by 5 mins.
Post race
Warm down:

feet in ice bath. cool down. Chat with some peeps.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

speed work.

Event comments:

Cranberry is a great race. I think it is still good but a bit less than in the past. Post race cookout wasnt as festive or plentiful as past.

nice effort for the double races this weekend.  Bet it's just a long training weekend for you.

Was the cookout not as good?  Used to have burgers and hot dogs.  They up the price for non-racers, too.  But I have to say the chicken tastes pretty good.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

After you have established the Ironman goal, the most important factor outside of the training is which race to choose? What is your best sort of course, hilly, rolling, flat?

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
