Pre-race routine:

I didn't know I was going to do the race until that morning. I was in Oceanside to see my son. He just returned from Afghanistan.
Event warmup:

Pray! My first ocean swim and without a wetsuit. The folks at the event were fantastic. I almost gave up and turned around trying to break through the surf. Once through the surf I kinda enjoyed the rollers and felt at peace. Lifeguards every where. So glad to have done it.

Soon after I got married, I decided I needed to get motivated to work out and focus on getting back into shape. I could barely jog a quarter-mile without needing a walk break.

I first decided I was going to "do" a triathlon in 1994. It wasn't until 13 years later, in 2007 that I actually did. Why did it take me 13 years to get to the starting line? The swim!

I think quite truly for the first time I 'get it'. It's not just about the fitness. It's not just about the great little endorphin rush as you hit 5, 10, 15 miles...its not just the medal at the end.

Many people in the triathlon world think they need to just emulate Ian Thorpe to have a faster time, or have a similar stroke to Michael Phelps to cruise through the swim. Unfortunately...
