Subject: Can't run due to a calf strain, but IMAZ is coming soon. What do I do?
I have been training for months getting ready for IMAZ, and recently developed a calf strain.
Here's a little history: I'm a 46 y/o male, good swimmer, avid cyclist, and so-so runner. I've done sprints & an HIM, Timberman 2012 with a 5:58 finish, 34:10 swim, 3:02 bike, 2:12 run. I have no problem doing a 2.4 mile OWS in under 1:10, and have close to 4000 miles on the bike this year, with several centuries & some long (80+) non-stop rides on my tri-bike. I had worked my way up to ~30 miles a week running, but did so too quickly. I have nursed a left-calf strain for a few weeks, logging only ~15 miles a week, but just as I thought that I was over it, it flared up, and now I have near-constant pain a limp. PT starts in a couple of days. Other than the strain, I am in much better condition than I was for the Timberman, better at swimming, faster on the bike.
I am not planning on running for at least four weeks, maybe longer, possibly not until race day. Gone are my hopes of a finish of 13:xx, and I'm going to have a run/walk strategy on race day. This will allow me to push a little on the swim & bike (not too much, I'm conservative when I race), to leave plenty of time to cover the 26.2 miles on my feet. I'm figuring on a swim/T1 of ~1:20, bike/T2 of 6:20, and I'll throw in 20 minutes for unknowns. That gets me on my feet in 8:00. I'll walk/run/walk, stop if I have to and try to make the best of it. Originally, I had planned on a run time of ~5:45.
I'll be increasing my swim & bike volume to account for the lack of running. Hopefully, my fitness can carry me through 26.2 miles on my feet.

My original "goal" was to finish, but I had hoped for a time in the 13's. Now, it truly is to finish, and to do so in one piece.
This will be my first & only IM, afte this it's sprints, OLY's and an occasional HIM.

Does anyone have experience with an injury that prevented them from running for an extended period before an Ironman? If so, how did you handle the training, injury, race & disappointment?

Thanks,

Pete

I'll draw your attention to the thread, "5 weeks rest before an IM."
There's a few of us on there with similar problems.

I had a similar thing going into IMFL last year....some soreness etc but then I tore the muscle on the run and DNF'd at like mile 20 of the run.  ANY WOOO

As a sports trained orthopedist this would be my advice RE the injury. 1-don't run 2-Get to PT 3-If you can afford it get a home electric stim unit 4-don't run 5-Try a calf sleeve.  I actually like the neoprene ones over the calf compression sleeves you can get at running stores.  google DJOrtho and you can order one there 6-don't run 7-give kinseotape a try

The bottom line is muscle heals with scar and it will take about 6 weeks for it to heal.  Every time you think its better and go try to run you injure it again and have to start all over.  There just is no magic bullet to heal it faster.  The timing sucks but it is what it is and running the marathon UNinjured will yield a far better result than running it injured even with taking time off.  Let your PT guide you as well.

As a triathlete with 9 years of experience and 5 Ironman finishes this is my advice 1-Don't run (see the theme?) 2-get yourself as healthy as possible to the start line.  Better to be healthy and undertrained than injured 3-Let the time go...seriously.....LET IT GO. This is your first IM...soak it in, have fun enjoy the day.  You never get to do your first one again.  Even if you were healthy I would offer that advice.  I know its really hard to let projected finish times go but LET IT GO.  Do the best you can with what God gives you on race day.  A million things can happen over 140.6 miles. Control the things you can control.

As for me and my injury and handling it etc............You know I totally don't regret stopping.  That injury sidelined me for months post race.  I could hardly walk when I stopped and I knew I didnt have enough time to finish.  I might have soldiered forward if it had been my first but at what cost?  I am extremely injury prone.  (I was a collegiate gymnast and that tore me up pretty good......lots of surgeries) so I am typically always fighting something.  I'm never going to be fast and it took me a long time to embrace my inner slowness but everyones experience is different.  If I were a talented runner (I completely SUCK at running) it would be a different set of emotions to be dealing with so its hard to extrapolate someone elses experience to your own.

Hope this helps. feel free to PM me if you have other questions about your injury

Socks had GREAT advice, and if you REALLY are going to race, then with those really good swim and bike times, why can't you walk the run to complete?  Is it against your nature to not walk the run to finish?  Just asking.

For my first IM in 2008 in training I did a walk/run. Run 3 minutes, run 2 minutes. On race day I had really bad Achilles pain coming off the bike, so I walked the entire marathon. Did it in 6:46/15:37 mm. While not that fast, my IM time in 2008 was 15:45, and my second IM in 2012 was 6:10 (on a easier course).

If you have a good swim and bike, and you walk most of the run if need be.

If you are able to walk in training, start walking! It takes practice to learn how to walk fast, and it works different muscles. My biggest regret for my IM in 2012 was that I didn't walk in training. Wish I had!

I had a similar problem in 2010 and was not able to train the last 5 weeks at all. At this point you should have a few centuries in your belt and some solid swims. Just take it easy and keep up the swim and bike and let the thing heal. Graston, ART, Compression socks, use everything you can.

Just go into the race with the 'bank' method, meaning your bike and swim banks your time for the walk. Don't push it on the run and hydrate alot; you'll be fine.

Sorry to hear that. I am going through something similar.

About 11 weeks back ( I am 8 days out right now) I got Plantar Fasciitis. I made the very hard decision to take time off the run. I did no running for 30 days, although I was lucky in that it did not affect my swim or bike. I had to completely change my focus and goals. Like you I threw out my time goals and have accepted the fact I will have to do a walk/run for the marathon.

In some ways it was actually good for me to be injured. It forced me to really focus on being smart and having a plan for the run. It is very unlikely I am going to run the entire marathon, especially since it is my first full. Having a run/walk plan and being able to practice it has really helped.

Try to not be discouraged. Sounds like you got some great professional advice on how to deal with the injury, and you have a plan.

Listen to this advice.

I'm not an orthopedist, but I have 10 years of triathlon experience, 7 HIM and 9 IM finishes.  When you get a calf injury from running, STOP RUNNING.  As Socks says, that just keeps the calf from healing.  You can swim, but don't overkick.  You can bike, but not a lot of hill climbing, keep the RPMs up and the effort down, and don't do something like standing hill climbs.

I too am training for IMAZ and last Saturday hurt my calf muscle.  I did a 15 mile run with a 1 mile 8% grade at the end, and later that evening could really feel a deep muscle ache and it forced me to slight limp. Going down stairs was awful.

I cut my planned Sunday 4 hour ride to 2 hours, and the calf didn't get worse but didn't get better either.  I don't think I made it worse.  Monday I skipped the bike and run planned and instead I did a 2200 yard straight swim with a pull buoy to avoid kicking.  I skipped Tuesday and Wednesday, and Thursday (yesterday) my leg was fine.  Today I'm going to try some swimming and biking.  I won't run again until Sunday, and I'm going to take it easy.

Undertraining is a much easier problem to deal with on race day than injury.  Let your calf heal!

Sue,

Would aquajogging aggregate the injury or be okay while healing from strain?

I tore my calf (second degree tear/strain) last year about 9.5 weeks before IMWI. I played it by ear for a couple of weeks and wasn't sure if I would be able to do the race, was considering pulling out by the drop by date at the end of July and signing up for Cozumel instead to allow more time to heal. I ended up taking about 2.5 weeks completely off of running and then slowly getting back into it with the help of my physio. I would wait until you meet with your physio. do everything that they tell you to do and hopefully you will be able to get back to running quicker. I would also make sure you get a PT that understands what you are wanting to do. My PT was an ironman herself, so she understood what I was trying to do and supported my efforts. When I first went to her I wasn't able to walk without pain, but ended up running the Ironman and PBing the race (and run).

FWIW, I was allowed to aquajog and elliptical before I was allowed to run. I talked to my coach and he rearranged my schedule for a few weeks to focus more on biking. biking was fine as long as I stayed in the saddle.

I've torn both of my calves with both being Grade 2 right where the soleus/achilles meet. First time I did it 4 weeks before Myrtle Beach Marathon 2008 and decided to try and run through it. I took off all of 3 days (despite the blood pooling, swelling, etc.) and then tried to limp along. Long story short, wasn't able to race. Hard lesson learned.

Next time was about 4 weeks before Marine Corps Marathon 2011. 50/50 as to need for surgical intervention. This time I dropped all running, focused on ART and self-massage using a baseball, and hit the pool/bike in an attempt to keep up generalized fitness. I visited the folks at Univ. of South Carolina Sports Medicine (same folks who put Marcus Lattimore back together twice) and listened to them. MCM was not a great time but I was able to finish.

IMHO, you should focus solely on getting your calf back up to speed. It's a lingering problem that takes months to fully heal. DON'T run for several weeks at least. Some folks I know say aqua-jogging works, others say it was a waste of time. I'd probably focus on very steady bike time focusing on RPMs and steady state. Run/walk IM mary seems smart.

Hope all works out. I look forward to seeing you at IMAZ.

aquajogging in a vest in water over his head without touching the bottom probably not. Also not sure it would benefit him at all.  I am not a fan of elliptical.  It alters your running gait and probably WILL injure his calf

As a 46yo male that has been involved with sports and fitness since 6th grade I would like to recommend a book to you called "The Anatomy of Stretching" by Brad Walker and it's about $18 on Amazon.

Since my late 30s I have noticed that it is nearly impossible to be involved in physically demanding sports and not incur sports related injuries without a good stretching program to go along with the workout/sport program I am involved in. Strength training also helps avoid injury but in my experience it is not as important as the stretching.

Stretching helps prevent injuries as well as recover from injuries. The book I mentioned above has stretches for calf strains but see you doctor (or a sport oriented doctor) before starting a stretching program to help heal your calf strain.

With all the running and cycling in triathlons I have found a good thorough stretching program for the legs to be critical.

Good luck,

Mark
