Comments:

I was nervous thinking they were gonna have a treading water for 4 mins. They did not do that! We stood on the dock till it was time. I let everyone else go before I got in. I started with a nice and easy stroke, telling myself you did this on Friday morning to prepare mentally. Once I settled in I started passing ppl and thought everything was going to be alright. I passed someone backstroking less than 200 in and thought not me today. I did end up backstroking briefly toward the end I also had to hold onto a kayak briefly with about 150 yards to go.
What would you do differently?:

Try and keep calm at the end and finish strong.
Transition 1
  • 07m 12s
Comments:

Opted to use the strippers. she got it right off so that was good. I also had them put sunscreen on me.
What would you do differently?:

nothing thought it went well
Bike
  • 2h 51m 17s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.62 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a goal of under 3 hours. I did that! I had a hard time getting focused on the bike. I was worried about saving my legs for the run. Finally just started riding. The weather was perfect for a long ride. I thought the bike went by fairly quickly.
What would you do differently?:

Try and hold back a little more for the run
Transition 2
  • 04m 31s
Comments:

need to learn how to rack my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Work on racking bike method
Run
  • 2h 23m 48s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

I saw my wife and kids right at mile one and that was inspiring that they were there. This was the first race they got to watch me. After I saw them my quads exploded and I thought this is going to be a long run. I ran to the first aid station and got to take a break and walk. I decided I would try and make it to every aid station before walking, My quads were on fire and couldn't do it. I looked at my watch to see where I was overall and I was surprised when I saw 4:40 at about 4-5 miles in. This gave me a thought maybe I could go sub 6. I started doing a run walk and that seemed to help time go by faster. I finally got at of my head and just ran. It helped that I rented a MyAthletelive and I got to see my family several time and they never saw me walk. I had a general Ideal where they would be and ran until I was past them. They were a big part of me finishing under my goal of 2:30. This was also my first half marathon. I was pleased with my 2:23
What would you do differently?:

Try and conserve some on the bike? I might could even implement Rule # 5 and harden the F@$% up
Post race
Warm down:

Walked and got Ice

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Using more on the bike? I am not sure if I could of done my first any better. I had a goal of sub 7 so I think I was pretty fast

Event comments:

The race was well organized with lots of volunteers everywhere. Running downtown was awesome. There were so many strangers that encouraged me the whole run it was unbelievable. I thought this was a great race for a first timer and would recommend it for anyone's first HIM. I will try and do this race again.

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.
