View Member's Race Log View other race reports
Cozumel, Quintana Roo
Mexico
World Triathlon Corporation
85F / 29C
Precipitation
Total Time = 6h 36m 29s
Overall Rank = 1039/1249
Age Group = 18th in 50
Age Group Rank = 57/72
Pre-race routine:

Have yet to develop one... Clif Bar two hours prior and Gel 30 min prior Water/ Electrolytes
Event warmup:

No in water warm-up but it did rain on me...
Swim
  • 46m 2s
  • 2078 yards
  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

Some of us (I jumped off the elevated dock) were still entering the water when the wave was released so my time may have been a few min faster but satisfied with a time with in 1 min of predicted time of 45 for first HIM

Rated as average for me but was pretty happy!
What would you do differently?:

Get in the water earlier (but not in front) work on drafting the late start and lack of others around ment few partners swam 80% of the distance alone.
work on sighting swam lots of extra meters zigzagging!
Transition 1
  • 06m 29s
Comments:

sun protection (sleeves) for arms is an issue lots of time will have to figure a way to speed process
socks still kicked my butt need them (for now) so...

Stuff had to be in bags so that took some time to get stuff out and put stuff in
What would you do differently?:

Long run (5-600 meters?) from swim exit to rack spot then to bike mount so overall nothing at this point but work to speed up still on my bike in less than 1 hour so perfect fit to the plan.

Bike
  • 2h 50m
  • 56 miles
  • 19.76 mile/hr
Comments:

nice ride could have been faster but wanted to make sure I had the legs to run. reduced my speed to saty in my plan of 3 hrs and still cut ten min off and had FUN
What would you do differently?:

go faster had the legs but live and learn
Transition 2
  • 03m 57s
Comments:

assigned rack so had to find plus find run bag to get shoes
What would you do differently?:

LEARN MY BIB NUMBER IN SPANISH would have help the AWESOME support to get it faster.
Run
  • 2h 50m
  • 13.11 miles
  • 12m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

99.9% Humidity and hot as hell sun sleeves work but get wet and do not evaporate in humid weather took me almost 5 miles to learn this.. Took them off body temp went down pace increased. 1st 5K took 42 min :-( should have been 30! 6 hour goal out the window... then "the Storm" 25-30 min of torrential rain 2-3 inches and hour rate/ and wind 20-25mph+ roads flooded and streams developed in the cross streets. Water on the course was 4 to 12-14 inches deep I will try and post a video of it
What would you do differently?:

put a treadmill in the steam room and train for the conditions... Work to bring down body weight will be the best thing I can do and run more miles...
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim experience level
Road bike vs Tri bike
and run heat and conditions (just glad I was not still on the bike)

Event comments:

With the weather conditions in Mexico earlier in the week I understand there may have been logistical problems.. Just tell us you have problems dont just say nothing...
Bags were strange should have picked up with packet but had to go to bike check in with EVERYTHING get bags unpack into bags then take home extra stuff and hope you had everything in the AM...

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.
