Cornelius, North Carolina
United States
Set Up Events
Total Time = 5h 18m 40s
Overall Rank = 53/250
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 8/45
Pre-race routine:

Had a strawberry nutrigrain bar an hour before race start.
  • 34m 21s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 38s / 100 yards

I'm not sure why my time was so slow. I felt like I was working just as hard as normal. Maybe the course was longer than it was supposed to be.
Transition 1
  • 03m 47s

This course had a very long run from the the water up to T1. My calves felt like they were about to cramp up as I was running. The only other time that has happened was after doing a swim without a wetsuit in 65 degree water. This water was nice and warm though, so not sure why the calves were so tight.
  • 2h 45m 34s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.29 mile/hr

I'm not sure why this ride was so slow. The course wasn't that hard. And, I felt like I was working just like normal.
Transition 2
  • 01m 36s

I didn't realize how close the finish was, so I only had time to get one of my feet out of my shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Go check out what the final 200 yards of the ride looks like, so I know when to take my feet out of my shoes.
  • 1h 53m 23s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 40s  min/mile

I felt great on the first 3 miles, and then felt awful when the hills started. Most of the second half of the run, my calves felt like they were gonna cramp up again, like they did in T1.
Post race
Event comments:

This was a good venue. My performance wasn't very good, but the race itself was fine. Setup events always does a good job. There were plenty of volunteers, and they were very friendly. I might have to do this one again, to make up for my poor performance.

Is it realistic to race a sprint and Olympic distance race within 2-3 weeks of one another to gauge my progress before tackling the half Ironman?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

How Pilates training helped a wanna-be triathlete realize the goal of completing a half-Ironman, Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island.

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

My First Half Ironman Experience-A Slow, Fat, Old Triathlete. Here is my story of my first, and probably only Half Ironman. I’m an almost 52 year old, VERY Athena triathlete.

Now, for the last 20 years I’ve always though that jogging seemed about as interesting as watching paint dry, and you know what? That’s how it turned out to be.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
