Overall Rank = 22/56

Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Breakfast (cereal, milk, toast w/ peanut butter, 2 cups coffee. Load gear and drive to the race site (20 minutes). Unload gear, set up transition, get body marked.
Event warmup:

200 yard swim in the lake.
Swim
  • 11m 39s
  • 600 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

This is a small race, so the 30 or so guys plus teams were in the first wave. I started 2-3 people deep on the right (outside). Got a good start and not much jostling. Once I cleared the dock, I could go further right to clear water, but drafted/sighted off a guy to my right. Drafting better (not hard, since I've never drafted much swimming).

Time included a 150 yard run up to T1.
What would you do differently?:

Good tune-up. Next week, I'll wait 20-30 seconds before starting since my wave will have 200 people in it.
Transition 1
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Got my shirt on before my helmet this time. Wiped the sand off my feet before putting my biking shoes on.
What would you do differently?:

Pretty good transition.
Bike
  • 35m 37s
  • 11.5 miles
  • 19.37 mile/hr
Comments:

Not a bad ride, but the loose gravel made it hard work, and we had to really slow down coming into corners.

One guy asked me if I wanted to make up some time (drafting). I declined. He finished about 30 seconds ahead of me.
What would you do differently?:

Call my friends on county maintenance...
Transition 2
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

Good transition. Rode up to the dismount line, popped off, and ran the bike through transition. Probably could have gotten the helmet off sooner (it was hot). Got started on the run and realized I'd left my running hat in T2.
What would you do differently?:

Get helmet off sooner. Make sure I have running hat next week.
Run
  • 22m 18s
  • 2.25 miles
  • 09m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Hot...I was losing motivation. Walked up the hills and ran the rest of the time.
What would you do differently?:

Race in Canada Eh!

Post race
Warm down:

Jump in the lake for a couple of minutes. Walked back to the finish line and cheered others on.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hot, how do you ride fast on loose gravel?

Event comments:

This was my first race last year, and I was at least 10 minutes faster this time. (Road bike and swimming confidence helped, running was about the same.)

Hey Great Race, Sorry I couldn't catch you, I didn't see anyone with beginner triathlete shorts on. I had an idea who you were from pics on the site, but maybe you have a little facial hair now. A Little nervous walking up to a stranger asking if he was a BT member. Either way, awesome job on a very difficult course. That run was an experience, especially for a road racer, who hasn't seen a cross country course since high school. The race was great, I'm thinking Ill do it again next year. Those people are great and a ton of fun. Thanks again for your help and good luck in your races.

Looks like you did what you wanted to do.  Good job, sorry to hear about the loose gravel, that is always a big pain to deal with.

I'm new on this site and this was my first triathalon. The loose gravel was a pain and I didn't know it was a cross country type course until we got there. But I had "fun" and can't wait until my next race.

Oh yeah my time, 1:34:38. I know I was in the back of the pack, but it's something to work off of for next time.
