Veteran 320  Lost, Florida |  Subject: Black FridayWith all the stabbings, fightings and shootings this past Black Friday, I just don't get it. Is it really worth it? To possibly lose your life over a discounted pair of PJs? What about the retailers? Are they liable for not providing a safe and secure shopping experience? The profits they make on Black Friday probably make up 1000x over for any possible law-suit that they may face. |

Best Buy had it really organized and they handed out tickets for hot door buster items about a half hour before the doors opened. Once inside the ticketed items went to one section and the others just went to the department where it would be and you got your name put on a list and someone helped you find the item and you checked out. It really wasn't that bad. |

Mainly to people watch and pick up $3 movies (got the last 2 X-men and Sandlot, both on Blu-Ray) and I needed another Blu-Ray player as mine started crapping out. Got the $110 Sony for $55. However...the line was VERY short (we got there an hour before opening and there were about 80 people in line). They were having a hard time giving out all of the door buster wristbands/tickets. In fact, they didn't give them all out. The 'funny' thing was there were people that camped out over night to get the doorbuster items, yet we could have gotten the same ones showing up an hour before the doors opened. Last year, we got there with an hour to open and the line was wrapped around the shopping center. Oh...and you could buy the same things on-line, that day so the whole Black Friday thing has lost its luster. |

Plus Hdtv and laptops generally pretty affordable now and HDtvs been around for awhile. Most PCs are more powerful than most people need also so there is not a big reason to upgrade. |

Seriously, the idea that "consumerism" is a bad thing is laughable considering how expensive a sport triathlon is. You want something, you buy it and there are stores that are willing to sell it to you. I stood in line for a little over an hour and got a new computer $300 off and met some really cool people in the process. No pushing or trampling. People see one news story on CNN and assume that is the case for every store. Now I can use it for sufferfest videos that my previous computer couldn't handle. |

Growing up in the Lutheran church, "Black Friday" was the name originally given to Good Friday, the Friday before Easter. The day Jesus was put to death, beginning the days of mourning until his resurrection. (Spare me any anti-Christian sentiments about the fairy tale or parallels to every other human mythology.) I take issue with the usurping of the name. Additionally, the term "Black Friday" in this instance was from a perpetuated myth by the retailers -- that this day they finally made enough to write their ledgers in black ink instead of red. Uh, yeah, that's why they can discount their prices so deeply and still make a profit. And I've got some land in Florida to sell you... But here we see humanity flying in DRIVES to GIVE THEM MONEY. And seeing how it's started to creep into Thursday, the race to be THE FIRST WITH THE BEST PRICES... Sickens me. I guess I see the lowest denominators of both sides being the participants in that scheme. |

I work in retail. I was working Thursday at 4PM through the night until early Friday morning. I do not like this time of year, but we do make sales. People were pretty much calm and in control getting into the store and were pretty level headed waiting in the lines to check out. It still amazes me that people are amazed that there are long lines to checkout, and even more amazed at the people who came in to buy toothpaste and then griped about the wait. The thing that bugged me the most were the people who complained to me on Thursday night about us opening on Thanksgiving, to which I kindly said "If you weren't here, I wouldn't be here" SO as much as people complain about Black Friday sales and the times they start, it will not change until it becomes unprofitable to be open. |
