So they are proposing a rule that will not allow college football teams to snap the ball until the play closk reaches 29 seconds in order to give the defense time to make substitutions. Some coaches say this is a safety concern to them.

I am not sure I see it as a safety concern and this will clearly impact alot of teams. Thoughts?

Do we need this rule change?

I can't see why they would make a rule change on the basis of safety without any evidence that it would help remedy a known safety issue.

Agree, it sounds more like teams using "safety" as a reason to slow down quick attack offenses like Oregon because they're getting their butts handed to them.
Unfortunately there are more teams that don't play hurry up than do, so the rule will probably be implemented.

From Coach Leach:

“It’s one of the most mind-numbingly dumb suggestions that I’ve ever heard,” Leach said on the show. “And what makes this one even more reprehensible is that it’s so transparently self- serving.”

After Saban get's ran out of New Orleans, I'm sure he is supporting this rule. I think it's ridiculous.......What's the point? A safety issue makes it laughable. So, I guess the "hurry up and spike it to stop the clock" scenario will be done away with?

Hell, it's no longer considered grounding, so it can be another wanton disregard for the rules here.

But, the "slow down" rule (oddly this will be called a delay of game penalty) isn't in effect for the last 2 minutes of half or end of game. This acknowledges the hypocrisy of it, meaning the other 56 minutes of clock time are played with skewed rules..

I know Saban wants to punish Auburn and that is why he supports it.

Bielema just wants people not to score so many points on us!

I think the rule proposal is stupid.  Nobody is currently stopping the defense from substituting.  Just do it faster, call a timeout, or take a penalty for 12 men on the field (or jump offsides purposely).

Next thing you know they will ban the fast break and full court press in college basketball.

Heh, from the article:
Calhoun said the committee discussed several options, such as adding an extra timeout, that might help prevent player injuries by making it easier for defenses to substitute. He said a trainer from the U.S. Military Academy also addressed the committee regarding a variety of medical issues.

I wonder if that trainer from Army had anything to say about option football and cut blocks.  Seems like a much higher risk of injury than up-tempo attacks
