Cranbrook, British Columbia
Triathlon British Columbia
Total Time = 5h 56m 52s
Overall Rank = 16 (F)/50 (F)
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 2/5
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4am. Went for a 10 min jog around Megan's driveway. Ate Vector and banana. Laid in bed, listening to iPod til 6, then followed Megan to the race.
Event warmup:

10 min bike, 10 min run, 5 min swim (all with 5*30 sec accelerations)
  • 39m 27s
  • 1900 meters
  • 02m 05s / 100 meters

Swim time includes T1.
Water was cold. Got into a rhythm and swam. Pace was comfortable (possibly holding back a bit).
What would you do differently?:

Swim harder.
Transition 1
  • 00m

Gong show! Narrow path to transition area, with wetsuit strippers blocking the path. Got tangled in a thread and tripped over the guy flopped down in front of me. Was cold and mildly disoriented, so had to sit down to do shoes. Bike-out was up a narrow, carpeted gravel hill.
What would you do differently?:

All of it.
  • 3h 07m 8s
  • 55.92 miles
  • 17.93 mile/hr

Bike time included T2.
Ate whenever I felt good. Ate alot. Lost 2 granola bars at start of ride.
What would you do differently?:

Secure my granola bars better.
Transition 2
  • 00m

Transition was faster. Legs felt good, but run-out was not clearly marked and marshalls were not paying attention, so I started out the wrong way.
  • 2h 10m 19s
  • 13.05 miles
  • 09m 59s  min/mile

First 6 miles, I thought I might be having a heart attack or an asthma attack. Tight feeling in chest, and HR was thru the roof, even though pace was VERY slow. Was also fighting urge to vomit. Focused on lowering HR and finding my stride, and next 5 miles felt slow, but much better. Finished strong.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for 5 minutes, stood in lake for 15, then walked some more while drinking recovery shake/eating. Stretched.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My running.

Event comments:

Very well organized. Race director created a fantastic environment and race dynamics were great.
