Comments:

I had planned to PR this race. I typically do well in adverse weather as I get motivated by the fact everyone is dealing with it and typically complaining and not liking it. I've learned to embrace it. I started with the 2:05 pace group figuring I would drop back to 2:10 at some point. The 1st 3 miles I felt great and was on my pace. Shortly after mile 3 my stomach started giving me problems. I sucked it up and kept with my same fueling plan (1 hammer gel, a bottle of Perpetuem, and a bottle of water) I alternated a sip of water and Perpeteum about every 20 mins and dropped my pace a little. I was trying to figure out what was the cause of the stomach issues as I followed the same fuleing pattern in Feb for a 26.2 in Birmingham. The only diffrence was my night before meal, at this one I had chicken at a family joint and I think that got me. I dropped my pace a little bit more and kept going. . . Between miles 8-9 I finally had enough and had to stop at the port-a-potty. After that my pace was blown and I just did my best to finish.

What would you do differently?:

Ensure I bring my own dinner for the night before. . .
Post race
Warm down:

Drank a recovery drank and hit the port-a-potty again...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Proper night before meal and more training.

Event comments:

This race was well organized and supported. I'm hoping when I see the course again in Sep for the 70.3 I will not have the stomach issues that hindered me at this race. Nice finishing medals. . .

Performance: Below average
My goal was to work my HR up and keep it between 135-145.
Course: I signed up for this race in order to get a look at the run course for the 70.3 in Sep, they use the same one. I liked the course it was mostly rolling hills, was well marked, and had plenty of pit stops and fueling stations. It was rainy and a little chilly to start out but warmed up and the rain let up at the end.

I just ran the Boston Marathon under nine minute miles, can I run eight minute miles for my half Ironman training runs? Or should I go slower?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
