Overcast
Total Time = 6h 19m 7s
Overall Rank = 1469/2700
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 161/221
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:00 and ate two servings of oatmeal and a Monster. Got dressed and headed for the start. Cold wind and rain were the order of the morning. Tried to relax and stay warm. Put my running stuff in a plastic bag. That turned out to be a good idea. Dry running shoes was really nice.
Event warmup:

No warm up. Just attended the Tri for Him pre race prayer.
Swim
  • 48m 39s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 18s / 100 yards
Comments:

Rough swim. Roughest I have ever faced. I must have swallowed a pint of seawater by the first turn. I never felt like I found a rhythm. I fed the fish a bit about 2/3 of the way through. Felt better after that.
What would you do differently?:

I would not wear standard goggles again.. I will switch to Aqua Spheres for the next ugly swim.
Transition 1
  • 05m 12s
Comments:

Wetsuit strippers rocked!
What would you do differently?:

I put on arm warmers for the ride.. I would skip that.
Bike
  • 2h 36m 6s
  • 56 miles
  • 21.52 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt really good on the bike. Tailwind at first let me keep 26 or 27 all the way out. The headwind back was interesting but was still able to keep a decent pace. I rode a Flo 80 front and Flo rear disc. No wind related issues.
What would you do differently?:

No arm warmers. They were too much. Good ride.
Transition 2
  • 03m 45s
Comments:

Listened to the winning pro finish while I put my running shoes on. Wore Smartwool socks. AWESOME! No blisters at all.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 2h 45m 25s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

I am a slow runner( Im 6'2" and 230#) but I felt good and ran the whole thing. The smell of honey suckle was awesome! The crowds were some of the best ever!
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Post race
Warm down:

Pizza and a coke. Then warm clothes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need more run training

Event comments:

I will be back for sure!!!

I just finished the NYC marathon on Sunday and I think I'm going to venture into triathlons. I am doing an Olympic distance and I want to do a 70.3 next year too. Any advice?

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.

A bad race left me smoldering, but time and a gentle breeze ignited my passion to race again.
