Thinking of the half. Is the 2 transitions a total PITA?

My second favorite race!

The 2 transitions isn't bad at all just plan accordingly and understand your t1 time will be 1 or 2 min longer than expected as you pack everything up and put it in the bag.

The water, weather and course are great!

If you are in my age group, its awful, don't come :P

Last year I did Kerrville as my first 70.3 and I loved it. I loved it other than the flat tire at mile 50, but that wasn't Kerrvilles fault... But, the venue is great, the town and people are amazing. It is a fun bike course, but somewhat challenging for a flat ground Houstonian like myself.

For this race I think you have to show up the day prior for check-in. I would highly suggest getting a room at the race venue hotel if there are some available. I did not last year, and I still was okay, but next year I will try and get a room if I do it. You leave your bike in transition T1 the day before the race.

Morning of: Get your stuff for T2 setup and then walk or bus or drive back to T1 and finish setting up over there.

Swim: 1 lap, really nice water. Simple course. run out of water up a small hill to T1

Bike, 2 Loops - 4 parts. Loop 1 - out - flat to downhill most of the ride, I went like 25-27mph for most of it, and I'm not that fast. Part 2: coming back, different roads, uphill overall and hilly on top of that, but fun. Same for loop 2. fast out, then slow back.

Run: I think we did 4 loops around the main street in the town. The atmosphere was great and many people are there to support you. There is 1 bigger hill that you hit on each lap.

Overall: Great course, I've now done 3 HIM's and this is my Fav course, with Galveston being a close second. Here's why. Kerrville can be a place where the whole family goes and they will get to actually see you over and over. That's nice for me. Unlike Galveston there is not a Rainforest Pyramid attraction for the kids, but Kerrville does have a part right on the course close to t2 that kids can play at. I want to do this again, but sadly must wait to see about possible wedding plans for a close friend, or I would have already signed up for this one and booked a room.

Hope that helps.

As Too damn Broke said

1. get there 1 day early for bike check in.

2. the host hotel isn't great but its close. Avoid the seafood buffet the night before at the bar on friday night if you get in then.

3. the people of kerrville are super suportive and cheer a ton from their porches and what not.

4. Try to finish as fast as you can, the beer always runs out.

oh and my age group is now 35-40... darn birthday.

The only thing I didn't like was this one steep hill. It came out of nowhere and killed by quads. I was more prepared the second loop for that beast. Other than that, I loved the race! Might do it again this year, too!

I raced the half in Kerrville in 2012 and loved it. Not sure if the bike course has changed at all since then, but i remember it being pretty flat for being around Kerrville. I didn't mind the two transitions at all. Its been my favorite half so far, better than Austin and Galveston for me.

I'll be doing this one as the finale for the Texas Tri Series. Never done it before and looking forward to it. I'm not concerned about the split transitions. The Austin 70.3 has been that way and it adds a little to logistics, but it works.

Doubtful the run course will have that steep hill this year. The run path was under construction so they had to change the run course last year. This year's run course should be on a great running path.

I remember talking to 2 people while on the run portion that had done the full at redman the weekend before. One was a nice lady that put my run to shame, and the other was an elderly gentleman who I just barely passed on at the half way point.

Both made me look like a slacker with the way they were toughing it out.

I only had time for one race this year - a sprint at that, and I chose this one.

As others have said - a lot of support and the two transitions isn't a big deal.

My feet went numb with the vibrations from the chip-seal on the roads, but don't know how I'd combat that.

Overall great race.

Only 2 months out - who all is in for this race? I officially signed up last week and this will be my first half. Very nervous and very excited at the same time.

I'm in. Last race in the Texas Tri Series, which I'm hoping to place in. Also kind of hoping to place in my AG at the race itself. We're coming into the key training weeks for that to happen.

DOH! Thats no good man, but it will make you more determined for next year right!

Going to sign up soon, just took a month off of all "racing" myself, between tri seasons and marathon seasons, I hadn't taken an extended time off in over 2 years. Getting back into training starting tonight! I feel so flabby after a month off, but so much better mentally.
