Here is a table of members from the winter mentor thread that I've pasted below in case most want to continue into summer.  This makes it easy to go to each other's training logs and leave inspires or just see how their training is going.  I will add newer members once we get a few more summer folks joining.

Originally posted by LarchmontTri Hey all...bio to come (sorry for the the delay on posting it). Picked-up my daughter's cold this past week (her entire class and teachers all had it), so I missed a few days of training mid-week last week. I was hoping for a big week last week leading into Memorial Day weekend, but it just wasn't to be. I did a 3 hr indoor ride yesterday with a couple of Inspector Lewis (Masterpiece Mystery) episodes keeping me company. I was hoping to ride outside, but it was raining again. My legs felt ok, though they had a bit less zip in them that I thought they were going to have, but it was a decent ride. I upped the resistance and tried to simulate some hills...and that was really tough, but good training. It's great weather here in the NY metro area today and I plan to run 7-10 miles later this pm and tomorrow morning (assuming the weather cooperates), hoping to get outside for my first(!) outdoor ride of the season. My first race is in late June, so it's about time that I get outside for some real riding, eh? Anybody racing this weekend? Or perhaps next? Hope everyone has a great Sunday.

Glad to see you continuing with the summer group Brian.  Hope you're feeling better.

Hey all, sorry it took me a couple of days to get back with my intro bio....I look forward to getting to know everyone better and hopefully we can all have a kick a$$ 2014 season.

NAME: Larchmonttri - Brian

STORY: Not that dissimilar to alot of folks...it was the annual Kona coverage that got me started. A few years ago, I was watching the Kona coverage and there was an 81 year old nun (whose name escapes me right now) finishing Kona. If I recall correctly, she had completed a dozen or so IM races and she was still going strong. And there I was on my couch. I had been watching the Kona coverage for years and never thought I could actually do it. Well, if an 81 year old nun could, then so could I. Not sure if that qualifies as divine intervention, but in any case I got up the next morning and laced up my running shoes and that's how it all started. My first season, I completed an olympic distance race. I've since moved up to 70.3 and 140.6 distance races.

FAMILY: Married and a 7 yo daughter

CURRENT TRAINING: Yes, I am currently training. Averaging 7-9 hours of SBR per week right now. Trying to do at least 1-2 abs and upper body workouts per week to complement my SBR. The upper body work is fairly light (ie. not trying to bulk-up) - just some push-ups, pull-ups, some curls, etc. My logs here on BT are up-to-date with my SBR training (I generally don't log my abs/upper body workouts). I fairly pleased with where I am right now, though I'll find out how I'm *really* doing in a few weeks at my first race.

2013 RACES: I raced the Musselman in mid-July. The Musselman is a 70.3 distance race in upstate NY. I did ok. That said, I know I can go faster, but it was pretty hot that day and that's my kryptonite.

2014 RACES: Syracuse 70.3 (in 27 days) and IMMT (in 83 days)

WEIGHTLOSS: Probably could lose some, 5-ish in the spare tire area, but overall, I'm feeling pretty good about myself.

WHY I WOULD BE A GOOD MEMBER: I love triathlons and realise that I still have alot to learn, so while I've done some long-distance races, I think I'm still on a fairly steep part of the learning curve.

Hope this works. Let me know if you have any questions. Happy Memorial Day to all!

Happy Memorial Day to all.

Rode outside this morning for the first time this year! Yay, we finally have nice weather! It was so nice to be outside versus the past 6 months riding in my basement. Rode for 50 miles, and felt pretty good. Focused on hills, so the avg speed wasn't great, but am thinking about those hills at Syr 70.3 and IMMT - long story short, it was a great day out. I think all the indoor training and the interval training over the winter has really paid off.

Now it's park time...my daughter is ready for the swings, slides and rock climbing wall. I'm ready for a nap, but that's not in the schedule...oh well.

Hello Jim,

I would like to be a part of this group.

NAME: Gil

STORY: I have been a runner for most of my adult life but got an itch for triathlons a few years back. I did my first sprint tri back in 2010 and I have slowly been progressing in the sport. I have done 5 marathons in the last 10 years and a bunch of half marathons and shorter distance running races. My first passion is running but due to some injuries I purchased a road bike then began swimming so doing a tri only felt right. I really enjoy being on the bike and have gotten a lot better over the past few years. I didn't swim competitively as a child so it was relatively new to me but with a lot of persistence and time I have managed to improved in swimming as well. Joining my local master swim team really helped with my confidence in the water. Last summer I completed my first OLY TRI and this year I will be doing my first HIM in July. I do this for fun because I'm too slow to try to compete so I always try to enjoy the moment and make the best out of every training day that I can plus I benefit from the healthy lifestyle.

FAMILY: Married for 17 years and we have 2 girls.

CURRENT TRAINING: I'm currently training for HIM Racine in July then will switch to marathon training. I will still bike and swim but only as a cross training tool. My goal for the Chicago Marathon is to run it under 4:00.

2014 RACES: HIM Racine, Chicago Marathon and some prep races TBD as I go.

WEIGHTLOSS: I was 189 in March and I need to get down to 170 or less. Currently I'm at 175. In the past I did not focus on weight but this year I have made it a goal to get under 170. Ideal weight is 164. Doing endurance training has helped me managed my weight.

WHAT WOULD MAKE ME A GOOD MEMBER: I have been involved with endurance sports for some time but fairly new to tri's and all with my experiences I can contribute to other athletes plus I'm still working on expanding my triathlon experience so listening to others and getting advise can be really helpful to me as well.

Hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend!

I had a pretty decent weekend. Started off with a great swim on Friday morning with my Masters Team and then a 1hr run.

Saturday I went for a bike ride but an hour into my ride, my seat post fell down all the way so I needed to take it back to the bike shop to fix it and re-measure my height and angle since they had just put a new seat on it. So far, I am really liking the Cobb Gen2 saddle. I then ran 3 miles after my quick bike ride.

Sunday was a 7 mile run before some BBQ's with friends/family

Monday- Instead of my usual rest day I decided to go to the Crossfit Gym with my wife and we did the HERO WOD "Murph" whic was:

1 mile run
100 pull ups
200 pushups
300 squats
1 mile run

It was tough but I made it through. A little sore today but I think I will be fine for tonights speed work at the track.

I cant believe there is only 80 some days left before my first IM!! Freaking a little but excited.

Welcome to our group Gil !!  We have similar backgrounds of being a long-time runner coming into tris.  I've raced Racine many times and really like the race.  Hopefully the lake will be calm on race day for you.

Hey Gil,
I'm also hoping to break 4:00 in the marathon after HIM training is over in October for me.

I'll be watching your progress to see how it goes!

I have great cardio, so I know it has to be me powering too hard or something?

Swimming was also my weakest link when I decided to try a tri, my first mentor introduced me to Total Immersion swimming (google it, tons of good stuff comes up) and reading that book and watching a few of the free videos online helped me work out my problems with breathing and I can now comfortably breathe while swimming. My initial goal was to just not drown during the race, but now through applying the different techniques I'm getting faster and able to not have my heart rate too high when I transition from the swim to the bike. Also, I always breathe on the 3rd stroke because then you can practice breathing in alternating directions so you're all set if for some reason the waves are extra choppy or you've got an obnoxious swimmer next to you on the side you usually breathe on.

Tour de Donut? This sounds like my kind of race! I definitely need to hear more about this!

Good luck with your training, sounds like you've got a great schedule of races planned!

I'll add my training update here as well so I don't have a 3rd post. I went for my bike fitting on Friday and of course everyone is totally right, there is nothing better than getting your bike fitted by a specialist. My speed and efficiency increased dramatically on my long ride this Saturday and I had fewer aches in my joints after the fitting. I really should have done that sooner! Thanks to the fitting, and the incredible weather, I had an awesome 45 mile ride on Saturday, I was supposed to add a 15 minute transition run after but got a bit of a late start and only had time for about 5 minutes before I had to rush out to family commitments. I then had a great 1800m swim and 11mi run on Sunday. I'm 8.5 weeks out from my HIM now and feeling like things are progressing well. Now that I'm done teaching for the year, I should also be able to add some strength training in throughout the week. Oh, and I had set an intention to eat better last week and I'd say I ate about 50% less nachos than before and about 50% more vegetables so that's something, right?

Tour de Donut is mostly a fun race, but since I do most bike rides solo, being in crowds will be good for me. Basically for every donut you consume, they take 5 minutes off of your time. Last year was my first time doing it. I think the person that won ate something like 24 donuts. These are huge glazed donuts by the way.

I couldn't decide last year whether I should work on bike training or donut consumption for this year's "race". I went with bike training, donuts really kind of gross me out so it's a once a year thing to eat for me.

Here's the website for anyone interested, they have 5 locations around the country.

thx! I have been watching Terry Laughlin's TI swimming stuff on youtube for a couple weeks now. very interesting stuff. I have definately made serious improvements since then, but still feel I need an extra pointer or two........ or just a lot of time in the water!!! do any of you think that 4 months of training is a good lead time to get a 1 mile swim in the bag? I am swimming between 2 and 4 times a week. I am probably good for close to a 1/4 mile without any breaks.

I would highly recommend that you find a local swim coach and have him/her take a look at your technique.  It would be money well spent if they can see any glaring stroke mechanics issues that can be addressed.   4 months is plenty of time ot tackle a 1 mile swim but don't just focus on swimming as long as you can without taking breaks.  Swim fitness is built not only through longer sets but also shorter, more intense sets.

I would also suggest trying to find a Masters Swim Team in your area if you can. For me, it was the single best thing I have done to improve my swimming. All I do is show up and get a killer workout in and pretty much its like having 1 on 1 coaching 3-4hrs a week.

thx - I have just recently been in contact with a swim coach in my area. very reasonably priced (I think). I asked for her resume, background, how many people she's coached, how long she has coached and how have her students succeeded from it (I teach jiujitsu, I would expect prospective students to ask the same of me). its $75 for 45minute in pool sessions. I am going to do several sessions with her. first session, then hopefully take any and all information to drill, then maybe go back a month later and do a second to see how I have improved.

anything else you guys think I should be looking for in a swim coach?

the only other thing to ask is if they have any experience with triathletes - if so they can provide insights to pack swimming, drafting, and proper ways of sighting in open water.  sounds like you're on the right path!!

First off, lad I could jump into this group !

So I started running in 2006 after picking up a RW Mag. and the first page was the Marine Corps Marathon. I had been out of the USMC a few years so it was basically a joke to everyone. Soon after I signed up Kona came on TV and I thought heck with the marathon, thats what I wan to do. Spent the next 18 months just running while I saved up for my first bike. Got it, same month hit my first sprint. Then went to OLY 2 months later and on to FL 70.3 2 months after that. Knew what distance I wanted but also knew I was leaving soon for a deployment to the desert. So went to local Tri club and told them I wanted to do a 140.6 and was new to triathlon and had the race in 4 months. Well they basically laughed me out of the park, so never went back. Did the Great Floridian as my first 140.6 and soon after spent next 2 years on the Iraq border. Been back since late 2011 and just been doing what I love. I have added 5 more 140.6s after being back , although the last 2 had major issues. Wrecked at mile 11 at IMFL but finished with big hematomas on hip and elbow, missing a lot of skin and a few fractured ribs. Then stomach issues at mile 75 at next one, had me unable to keep things down for rest of race. So I am really wanting to put together the next 2 and have a decent race. I am married to my biggest fan, who also happens to be my training partner. In all our favorite distance is the long course but we race just about anything. Might be racing next weekend, it will be our last before Louisville

So training, kinda deep into if for Louisville but trying to keep an open mind about it. We got a plan and working it pretty good. This is the first one that I have not written so its kinda odd for me but so far its working out great. All I do is move some things around to fit our week better but nothing much.

So me, I am in the FL National Guard now and do as much work with them as I can, also a full time student and on a plan to finish my BS in exercise science next year. We also have a few teenagers, so between that and training there is very little down time right now.

Well looking forward to this I have not been these groups since 2006 ish Im guessing and had a awesome time during it. Looking forward to some good training and bouncing ideas . thanks

nope, no me. Training only...

First race of the season is June 22, Syr 70.3 23 days!

And then IMMT in 79 days.

I've been training fairly consistently for the past 5-6 months and am really looking forward to race day. But alas....

If anyone is racing this weekend....good luck!

I did a 5K last night and placed first in my age group! I don't really know what my time was because the entire field took a wrong turn at the beginning of the course (as directed by volunteers handing out water). Most exciting though was that my kids both PR'ed in this 5K. My 10 year old daughter by about 4 minutes and my 7 year old son by 14 minutes!

Today was long run day for me, it was a tough run. Combined with the hard effort late last night (the 5K was a Glow Run) and ridiculous humidity this morning, I struggled through 5 miles instead of 6. I'm really looking forward to my long bike day tomorrow to spin some of the soreness out of my legs!

Happy weekend everyone!

No racing for me this weekend, but this weekend is the ultimate in fitting in my long training sessions within a ridiculous family life schedule.

Sat: wake early to head out of the house with a plan of doing 9 miles. Decide to take a "new" route that equated to 14 miles...OOPS!

Now I am sitting on the bike trainer for a 2 hour ride as we have had consistent rain over night and the radar doesn't show any signs of slowing this morning

Good luck to all of those racing this morning, hopefully it is drier where your at
