Pre-race routine:

up at 5:15. Had a bowl of cheerios, blueberries and coffee. Started to nurse diluted accelerade. Left house around 6:15, arrived at race around 7:10 for 8 a.m. start. Hubby and kids slept in. oh well
Event warmup:

Took awhile to get race packet and numbered. Stretched a bit, visited potty. Had some GU about 15 minutes before start. Hopped in the water a few minutes to get acclimated and calm nerves. Last (and first) open swim three weeks ago didn't go well, so I thought warming up in the water would help. It did.
Swim
  • 16m 57s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 16s / 100 meters
Comments:

well, I felt better on this swim than last. I did it six minutes faster (but then again, everybody did this 1/2 mile swim faster than the one I did three weeks ago...what's with that?) I acutally drafted a couple of times. Still unable to chill out enough to stroke efficiently and smoothly, like I do in the pool. Ended up breathing every other stroke instead of every third. Also, since I was breathing on one side, I strayed a bit from the course. I did about as well as I thought. This winter will work on swimming, as I feel I can do an Oly bike and run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

wet suit came off pretty well. Don't know any transition times because race organizers calculate time running out of the water, dismounting from the bike, and the finish line
Bike
  • 51m 30s
  • 15 miles
  • 17.48 mile/hr
Comments:

really pushed myself. felt good. course was three 5-mile loops.
What would you do differently?:

I need to remove my rack to lighten up bike!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

I bike wearing running shoes. Just did a couple of quick stretches, as the beginning of the run was up a steep hill
Run
  • 45m 6s
  • 5 miles
  • 09m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

I had slight tummy cramps from drinking on bike the first half of run. Otherwise, felt good.
Post race
Warm down:

stretch, eat (watermelon, breakfast cookies, cliff bars), drink endurux

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Tummy cramps

Event comments:

Race started about 15-20 minutes late. I wish the organizers calculate transition times. At my race three weeks ago, I ran the 5 miles at a 8:35 minute pace. It didn't feel to me that at this race I ran 9:02 pace. This course was a little more hilly, but not enought to warrant a 30 second increase in pace. Oh well, as a beginner, I'm pleased with my results and look forward to returning next year and see how much I've improved.
