Total Time = 1h 45m 2s
Overall Rank = 11f/70f
Age Group = 35-39f
Age Group Rank = 3/12
Pre-race routine:

Drove up an hour and a half from the twin cities (where I was visiting family.) Had driven 12 hours from KY 2 days earlier.
Event warmup:

Jogged a mile. Did not feel great- a little stiff and dehydrated. Tried to talk to a few locals about the course, but I must have picked the wrong people because no one was very friendly. Set up transition and tried to figure out where the bike-in, run-out, etc. was.
Run
  • 21m 24s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 17s  min/km
Comments:

Went out a little fast and had to regroup. I was in the amateur women wave, so sat back behind the leaders. Felt ok but just dull.
What would you do differently?:

Hold back on that first hill. Drink a sports drink.

Fast enough for me
Bike
  • 58m 45s
  • 20.7 miles
  • 21.14 mile/hr
Comments:

Flew along nice the first half and then really struggled the second half. Found out that my rear brakes had begun to rub at some point on the course. No wonder it felt ridiculously hard. Garmin said 21.2 but results said 20.9.
What would you do differently?:

I've fixed my brakes about 3x in the past month for the same problem and they will not stay put. Going to upgrade to some new ones. Wonder how much it affected my performance.
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

A little slow.
Run
  • 23m 18s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 40s  min/km
Comments:

My legs were toast for this run. Felt like I pushed harder than I usually do on the bike, and never found my rhythm. Got a little embarrassed when the announcer made a crack about my running stride, but yes, it is awkward. I need to work on it.
What would you do differently?:

I think cycling with the rubbing brakes took it's toll. I was pretty disappointed with my run time, but it looked like in the results that the majority of people slowed down a minute or two.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around with my dad. Got to see a 90 year old finish, which was really cool.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mostly, my brakes rubbing. All 8 elites and 2 amateurs beat me, so it wasn't my best race.

Event comments:

Really organized with nice volunteers, and the course was really well-marked.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

My first duathlon was a success. I had so many fears before the race but none of those fears happened. And when it was all over, I felt I had accomplished something big.
