La Crosse Area YMCA

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 40m 43s
Overall Rank = 56/84
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 9/13
Pre-race routine:

Woke up @ 4:40. Had some Cheerios for breakfast. Packed the car last night so out the door by 5:30. Set up transition and made mental notes of my rack location for transition.
Event warmup:

Got in the water for 10 minutes and did some light swimming.
Swim
  • 11m 35s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

Decent swim. My time improved drastically from last year thanks to far less chop on the water. I had a fair amount of open water. A lot of the swimmers went very wide. I did not follow the leader. The swim ends with a run uphill to transition. I was out of the water before 11 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

I could take some swim lessons to be a better swimmer. Otherwise it was about as good as I could expect.
Transition 1
  • 02m 16s
Comments:

BAD transition. Wasted at least 30 seconds by going to the wrong rack. a rookie mistake. I even made a point before the race to count out the racks. I was too concerned with removing my suit and not paying attention. I was positive someone stole my bike. What an idiot I was here!
What would you do differently?:

Pay attention to what I am doing.
Bike
  • 54m 44s
  • 17 miles
  • 18.64 mile/hr
Comments:

My plan was to go hard on the bike to pick up time for what I assumed would be a weak run leg. I got out fast and felt pretty strong throughout. I got loose on one turn early on and almost crashed but I saved it and did not back down. I passed a lot of people and was passed by very few. I hammered up and down the hills. It was a good bike.
What would you do differently?:

I had a little more to give. I could have given that.
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

I didn't kill myself on this transition. I could certainly have been 20 seconds faster. But I was not looking forward to the run so the short break was nice.
What would you do differently?:

I could have moved faster.
Run
  • 30m 56s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 11s  min/km
Comments:

I have not logged nearly enough miles this year so I knew the run would be a challenge. I really just wanted to stay as close to 10 min miles as possible. I got a side stitch with about a half mile left, but I ignored it and pressed onward. It was rough, but I held 9:35 or so for the last mile.
What would you do differently?:

Log more miles.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing much. Walked around and talked with some friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I am overweight.

Event comments:

It is my hometown race and it is a good race. It is a nice setting and not a huge race. Not much for swag and no finisher medals, but it is inexpensive and fun. And we got nice shirts this year which was great.

Soon after I got married, I decided I needed to get motivated to work out and focus on getting back into shape. I could barely jog a quarter-mile without needing a walk break.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

You can spend a small fortune on these pre-wrapped bundles of energy, thinking they offer magic ingredients-not true. “Energy” simply means “provides calories” and not “will make you feel energetic."
