Pre-race routine:

Ordinary breakfast of eggs & V8 juice. Drove to race site 1 1/2 hers early! Set up road bike on trainer.Rode aero bike just enough to check shifting, computer, etc.
Socialized, admired bikes. Ate 1/2 Clif bar & bread/hummus 1 hour prior and Hammer gel 15 minutes before.
Event warmup:

Warmed up on road bike set up on trainer 15 minutes easy spin, 2 x 30 second all-out intervals with 2 minutes easy in between. Finished 10-15 minutes before start time.
Bike
  • 11m 14s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 16.56 mile/hr
Comments:

I went right out in 5c for a couple of minutes, dropped to 5b for a few; then rode the last 4 minutes back at 5c. I didn't know how to pace a race this short, so I just rode all out.
What would you do differently?:

Since my pace was actually faster at 10k, maybe I'd try holding back a little. My cadence was very high throughout, average 99. I don't know if that's good or not good.
Post race
Warm down:

Spun high rpm on other bike on the trainer for 5-10 minutes Ate 1/2 Recoverite bar & hung around socializing until 2nd race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just need more training & conditioning.

As the fog cleared, the buoy that I first saw earlier in the morning was just the first marker in a very long line of buoys that stretched across the lake like a runway for a 747 jetliner.
