Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 11m 58s
Overall Rank = 21/58
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 2/3
Pre-race routine:

Woke up later than I normally would have at 5am. Ate some toast and an apple I think. Watched my Married With Children for a few minutes and left the house at 5:45. Only takes 10 minutes to drive to the race site.
Event warmup:

Jogged about 1/4 mile, stretched, jogged another 1/4 mile and stretched again.
Swim
  • 10m 55s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

Making it to the first buoy was easy, other than there was a ton of hitting other people's feet/arms/etc. I was actually kind of laughing to myself at how chaotic it all was, and I was right in the middle of all of it. Rounded the first buoy and that's where the wind & waves were waiting for me. Took a huge gulp of water and that was pretty much the beginning of the end. Waves seemed to be about 18 inches high and I could not swim freestyle and avoid the waves. I couldn't get in to the rythym of the waves. So I breaststroked almost 300m and stopped several times just to breathe. By far the hardest OWS I've ever done. It was so windy and water was so choppy that at least 5 people DNF'd and literally went home right after the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Not much I can do against high waves/wind. More OWS I guess.
Transition 1
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

I remembered to shift in to the easiest gear before the race this time! But I forgot to un-velcro my shoes. One of these days I'm going to remember to do both!
Bike
  • 37m 12s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 20.00 mile/hr
Comments:

It started raining while I was on my way out on the bike leg. That didn't bother me. After my abyssmal swim, I wasn't too concerned about doing well overall. But I rode to the best of my ability and turned in a decent time.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Run
  • 21m 35s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

It was still raining until the last 1/2 mile or so of the run, so I had no problems keeping cool. I was glad my feet weren't sloshing around in my shoes trying to give me blisters. I pushed harder than I had a week before in my previous race, but I didn't burn myself out. Still waiting on results, but I checked the unofficial results after the race and I PR'd with a 21:34 or so. I haven't ran that fast since I was in high school. It remains to be seen if the course was actually 3.1 miles. I'm going to confirm that today by going out there and checking mileage for myself.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The swim portion. Not much I can do to combat waves, but I can definitely still work on my swimming ability.

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

If you haven’t done any bricks yet, this isn’t the time to start piling them on, but here are some examples you could do in the lead up to your race.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

Since I didn't have much time and since it's a super sprint, am I OK just go to at the training relatively hard through Thursday or even Friday?
