Sunny
Total Time = 2h 17m 40s
Overall Rank = 4/95
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 1/11
Pre-race routine:

Woke up, showered, applied sun screen, dressed, then ate some breakfast (coffe with a slice of bread with peanut butter, bananas, and honey). Are a GU 15 minutes before race time.
Event warmup:

Swam a few circles in the lake.... noticed my Garmin 310 filled with water. This race would be a first for me on perceived effort alone.
Swim
  • 22m 32s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 30s / 100 meters
Comments:

My swim went very well. Navigation was spot on and effort seems about right.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

The transition area was dirt and full of goat heads. So, I took a little extra time washing off my feet with a water bottle I had in transition and making sure there were no goat heads stuck to my feet before I put my bike shoes on. I opted to run, carrying my bike, to the mount line.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Given the conditions of the transition area, I did the best I could.
Bike
  • 1h 10m 18s
  • 40 kms
  • 34.14 km/hr
Comments:

The elevation profile for the course map did not do the hills justice. They were bigger than anticipated - which made for some challenging climbs and fun descents.
What would you do differently?:

Not mix my Heed so strong.. it was way to sticky and hard to get down.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

There was no T2 time given on the results page and I have no Garnin data - so, I have no idea how long I spent in T2. I feel T2 went well though. Racked my bike, removed my helmet, swapped my shoes, grabbed my visor and race number and headed out for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 43m 30s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 21s  min/km
Comments:

My worst discipline by far. I gave it the best I could and just tried to keep moving. The little hill in the middle of Riley Rd kicked my butt!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

I grabbed a water and walked back down the run course to cheer on my friend and my wife who were also racing.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nohing

Event comments:

I really enjoyed the race and would race it again. If there were room for improvement it would be in transition area (dirt / goat heads), more (any?) traffic management on the bike course, and the chip timing (results were pretty screwed up raising questions during awards).

Congrats on the AG win and 4th OA!!!!!!!!!!!! I agree that the elevation profile didn't do those hills justice. I liked the undulation of the course though, work hard up the hills and fly down! My son said that hill on Riley was a bear too, and to face it four times?!

It was nice meeting you finally. Hope your wife enjoyed the race.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?
