I'm planning on coming down to Austin for this race. This will be my second half and I was hoping for insight from those who have done the race in the past. Also what are some good hotels near the the race other than the host hotel?

There are no hotels near the race site.  The closest hotels are near the airport.  I think the hotels listed on the travel part of the Austin 70.3 website are closer to downtown.

So the question is do you want to stay closer to downtown where there is more stuff to do but further from the race site or do you want to stay closer (near the airport) where there's not much around?

I've done 15 WTC IM or 70.3 events and Austin is by far the worst of those 15 races.  My personal opinion is the race sucks.  I found some posts of mine on ST from a couple of years ago related to this when someone posed a similar question: http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=3951295

A little over one week to go. This thread has been a little quiet for a good sized race (is there another conversation going on somewhere else?). I've been doing my research to prep. Some comments / questions...

- Anyone know the current water temp? I've done some internet searching and not come up with anything.
- How bad are these "sand spur" things in the transition area. Are they really bad enough to put on flip-flops coming out of the water or carry your bike? I'm sort of focused on my time and I really don't want to mess with that stuff.
- I don't have a good feel for the run course. I've read that it's got at least one hill. Are there more? And apparently part of it used to be unpaved. I assume that's no longer the case?

The 10 day forecast calls for Fri to be 57/76. That would be incredible if we had that race dayA

So much for that.  Looks like mid to upper 80's.  Those of you in the later waves are going to have a hot run.

We both raced in 2011 when it was 90 so you have experience doing that race in the heat.

Can't be any hotter than IMTX in 2013.

Stopped in Austin to check out the bike course. OMG. If you can pick out something bad for a bike course, this has it all. I drove the entire length and was almost car sick by the end. Road is very rough and wavy, drops of the shoulder in several places, dogs darting out at you, way to many 90 degree turns, crosses one railroad track about four times, hills that go up but very little down on the other side to get any speed....etc. There is only one 5 mile section that is relatively smooth and flat. This is going to be an experience, to say the least. Rant over!!! That said, I am looking forward to it. Come on November.

I just finished the NYC marathon on Sunday and I think I'm going to venture into triathlons. I am doing an Olympic distance and I want to do a 70.3 next year too. Any advice?

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.
