Total Time = 00m
Overall Rank = 128/345
Age Group = M55-59
Age Group Rank = 10/23
Pre-race routine:

Stayed in Inver Grove at a Microtel. Mexican on Fri nite, Honey Nut Cheerios and banana for breakfast. 8:05 start for me, 7:30 race start. Arrived at site about 5:45.
Event warmup:

Rode on Wabasha over river then down to Shepard. Back up to Kellogg and then to transition. Ran some. Met Bob and Kay before the race. Lot's of pee breaks.
Run
  • 18m 25s
  • 4.6 kms
  • 04m  min/km
Comments:

This leg was supposed to be 4.6k=2.85 miles. Official results have me at a 6:26 pace, Garmin at 6:46. I ran hard but held some back despite seeing a lot of runners ahead of me. Our wave was M50-59. My target was 6:45-6:50.
Transition 1
  • 00m 34s
Comments:

Major screw up in T1 although not reflected in my time. I took off w/o my helmet. Doh! The timing mat was just outside of transition with a long run to the mount line. I was well out of transition when they yelled and I realized it was me. Thought about leaving my bike but took it with me. Then had troubles with helmet/sun glasses. All the while the guys I had outrun are pouring by me. Not sure how much time I lost, at least 30 sec but under 60. Since I had crossed the timing mat the extra time must have went on my bike time.
What would you do differently?:

Comments:

My T1 helmet screw up was in my bike time. Tough course to go real fast. Shepard stretch was flat and fast, especially way back with the wind. Coming down the bridge on Wabasha back to transition and 180 turns in laps 1 & 2 was tricky. Road was real rough once across the bridge and heading down to Shepard, dark in one area due to overhead roads.

Like at Apple I kept Garmin on wrist and did not even look at it during bike. Just went hard and by feel for cadence.
Transition 2
  • 00m 37s
Comments:

No problems here.

No AG results showing transition times but eyeballing T times I did well within AG.
Run
  • 18m 9s
  • 4.4 kms
  • 04m 07s  min/km
Comments:

Official pace was 6:38, Garmin was again short. Started a little slow just over 7:00s out of TA up the hill to aid station by start line but then got into a good rhythm and continually picked off runners.
Post race
Warm down:

Found Barb, Bob & Kay at finish line. Drank a water & gatorade. Went back to car and changed.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Technical bike course not my strength

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Don’t forget this is an incredibly big year for sport with the Olympics back in Athens where the modern Olympics started, and especially triathlon to make its second appearance.
