Total Time = 3h 28m 59s
Overall Rank = 2038/2708
Age Group = Athena F39UND
Age Group Rank = 5/11
Pre-race routine:

ONE cup of coffee, fruit smoothie, lots of water
Event warmup:

stretching, deep breathing, quieting the voice inside my head that tells me i'm just a chubby girl who can't do a triathlon
Swim
  • 35m 35s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 22s / 100 meters
Comments:

lake was super choppy and threw me around like a rag doll, plus i must have swum an extra 300m zigzagging all over the place.
What would you do differently?:

learn to swim straight.. i swam in the pool for a year and never realized how much i favored my right arm until i started open-water swimming this summer. i must have compensated without realizing it in the pool all that time. also i need to get more comfortable with group swims..
Transition 1
  • 06m 10s
Comments:

transition was super muddy and huge so i had to run far and i'm a slow runner, but i'm still not sure why my T1 time was so long - i know i wasn't a speed racer, but this is crazy long.
What would you do differently?:

i dunno.. run faster?
Bike
  • 1h 21m 31s
  • 40 kms
  • 29.44 km/hr
Comments:

few things in life make me happier than clipping into my peddles. ii'm pretty sure this is a PR for me for this distance.
What would you do differently?:

i had a great ride. i might try to keep my pave more inform. it varied a lot.
Transition 2
  • 03m 36s
Comments:

was super muddy but managed to get my running shoes on without drudging through too much mud
What would you do differently?:

get some quick-tie shoestrings
Run
  • 1h 22m 5s
  • 10 kms
  • 08m 13s  min/km
Comments:

my normal pace is slow - about 11.5 minute miles, and i didn't feel like this one was slower than normal, but i guess it was. i didn't walk - i was able to run the whole way. everyone had slow run times, so perhaps it was the heat and humidity. i got chills around mile 5 and couldn't figure out why. i thought i might be getting sick.. but then a girl next to me said she had chills around mile 5.5.. said it was from the crowd. i was so happy to have a reason for my chills!!
What would you do differently?:

will work on run speed in the off-season.
Post race
Warm down:

walked for a long time

What limited your ability to perform faster:

heat, humidity, waves in the lake, running speed (or lack thereof!)

Event comments:

this was my first oly distance and it was great. i am in love with triathlon!!

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
