Subject: Vision crankset vs Ultegra
The new Felt 2015 line & website launched today & I'm really liking the new B2 with DI2 for under $4,000, but I have a very newb question about it. Why does Felt use Vision cranksets on all of its bikes (except the top of the line DA) instead of Ultegra cranksets when the rest of the components are all Ultegra? Cervelo does the same thing with FSA cranksets.

I'm not a bike guy at all, so this may be completely obvious, but I'm nit seeing it.

bike companies put out "incomplete" kits (usually shimano/sram/campy derailleurs/shifters, then other, cheaper brands to fill out the "disposable" parts)

Cranks are one of the most expensive pieces to a full kit, so it's a good place to save some $ for the company.

You'll also notice both brakes and brake levers are not shimano. (although to my knowledge only DA Di2 has brake lever shifters currently)

Got it. So it has nothing to do with fit/finish (i.e. an Ultegra crankset won't fit in a BB30), and everything to do with saving a few bucks?

I assume that if the proliferation of these cheaper components is so widespread that they can't be terrible quality & there would be no need to special order a bike with full Ultegra from head to toe?

right. If you (or Felt in this case) really wanted an Ultegra crank on it, adapters would allow you to run it on BB30/whatever.

For the most part, components have reached a point where even "low" end stuff works very, very good. Will a vision crank be as good as an Ultegra one... no. Could you sit blindfolded on two bikes, one with ultegra and one with vision and tell the difference... very unlikely.
