Madison, Wisconsin
United States
World Triathlon Corporation
72F / 22C
Sunny
Total Time = 14h 30m 17s
Overall Rank = 1695/2900
Age Group = 60-64
Age Group Rank = 24/46
Pre-race routine:

Lots of logistics to manage. Dropped special needs bags off at 5, tried to relax until 6, then headed down to water. Changed and dropped morning clothes bag.
Event warmup:

Not available
Swim
  • 1h 20m 37s
  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

The biggest washing machine I've ever experienced. Must have bumped or been bumped 100 times. Wide deep water start, I was 3/4 back just left of ski jump. Boats forced swimmers to narrow to only 50 yds. wide by first turn. Merging traffic made it difficult to swim with any form.
What would you do differently?:

Get out in front more.
Transition 1
  • 10m 37s
Comments:

Great wetsuit strippers and the run up the helix was crazy with spectators. No chairs to change so sat on floor.
Bike
  • 7h 00m 53s
  • 112 miles
  • 15.97 mile/hr
Comments:

I had not done enough bike mileage and not enough hill climbing for this race.
Transition 2
  • 08m 59s
Run
  • 5h 49m 11s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 13m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

My back was very sore and walked more than I wanted to. Tried to keep a 13 min pace but slowed when it was clear I'd be over 14 hrs.
What would you do differently?:

More training. My back problems in April-June were tough to recover from.

Event comments:

Fantastic race--given that early season your whole season was in doubt it is absolutely fabulous to see you pull this IM off!  I hear it is one tough course but with amazing crowd support.  Great work!!

I'm a fairly good climber but don't want to blow up on the run. I'm 60 and have a FTP of 230 watts. Any suggestions?

I was in the moment, living a dream and on top of the whole world! Honestly, I wish everyone could experience that feeling because it truly cannot be described.

Should I remove the PD Jammers bars and ride it as is, set-up for riding in the drops and hoods? Should I run my Easton Orion II wheels or my Hed Jet60 C2's for IMWI?

If you would have told me that I would want to train over ten hours a week for a race that can last up to 17 hours, I would have laughed. But somehow, my ACL injury has refocused my outlook on life.

It makes no sense to train hard for a year to hone that aerobic system only to have all that training undermined by a few anaerobic bursts on race day. So, how do you go about it?
