Sunny
Total Time = 57m 41s
Overall Rank = 9/222
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 2/14
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:45, ate some oatmeal, a banana, sipped some gatorade. Packed up mine and Rachel's bikes as we were both racing. Got to the race site a bit before 6. Got a decent transition spot near bike in/out, same rack as Jon, next to Pete.
Event warmup:

Jon and I went for a 2 minute ride and froze our asses off. Air temp was pretty cold, and we were only wearing speedos and crop tops
Swim
  • 07m 36s
  • 400 meters
  • 01m 54s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started out maybe 11th, right behind barkeep. planned on holding onto his feet as long as possible, wasn't expecting much. I had a rough entry into the water, but quickly found a nice pace. I passed 2 people within the first 100 yards, and was within feet of Mike. Not close enough to get a decent draft, but I was able to follow him around the course without sighting much. This was helpful, as the fog on the pond made sighting difficult.

The remainder to the swim went fine, didn't really hammer much, just kept a good turnover and strong pull. Happy with my result, although the course was likely long (which was fine).
What would you do differently?:

Maybe start a little more controlled and pick up the pace later in the swim. I tell myself this every race and have yet to do it.
Transition 1
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Took a few extra seconds to get the swimskin off, it always seems to get a bit stuck on my massive quads... 22nd overall... maybe I should have run a bit harder...
Bike
  • 27m 17s
  • 9.87 miles
  • 21.71 mile/hr
Comments:

Coming out of the water, I was quickly chilled by the air temp. Plus, I was only wearing a speedo. My legs were frozen, and never really warmed up. There is a hill right out of transition, and I took it a bit easy. After, I tried to get the legs going, knowing the remainder of the course was flat, but really struggled on anything with an incline. I wasn't even averaging anything over 20mph until the 2nd lap.

I was really surprised by the amounts of false flats and how much more difficult they made the course seem. Maybe it was just me, but I actually was expecting a much faster average. But training has been non-existent the last few weeks.
What would you do differently?:

Push, try and get the legs warmed up faster, maybe a higher cadence initially, as opposed to trying to push a harder gear.
Transition 2
  • 00m 32s
Comments:

Went smooth, found my rack, shoes on, got out.
What would you do differently?:

nothing. smooth...
Run
  • 21m 13s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 14s  min/km
Comments:

Out of transition, and quickly into a groove, right behind pete and mike. They quickly pulled away, but I had no intentions of staying with them. I also quickly learned that I didn't use enough Body Glide on my inner thighs and the chaffing started immediately. The price you pay to embarrass yourself...

The first climb up the hill sucked, but the descent was pretty awesome. Pounded the hell out of my legs. The second time up was faster, fast finish downhill! Happy with the run, although I do think it was a bit short. But not by much. Probably a better run than last week.
What would you do differently?:

train more consistently, I did nothing this week. Like absolutely nothing.

Event comments:

great local race, excellent execution for a first time event. you could tell that the race staff really thought it through and it was much appreciated. Tons of volunteers, everyone was in a great mood, and there were a bunch of guys in speedos. What more could you want?

It looks like you held on plenty well to my feet. I knew you were behind me, I just didn't know you were that close all the way through T2.

Remember the Body Glide for this next race.
