Regular 606 Portland, Oregon | Subject: RE: No stretching The first link (an article about this study... http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0003999396901379clearly states: "Generalized ligamentous laxity or tightness is a genetically determined component of overall joint flexibility that cannot be readily altered by stretching.’ " citing: http://rheumatology.oxfordjournals.org/content/12/1/47.short(which I do not have access). It goes on to say: "Macrotrauma, repetitive micro- trauma, or both may lead to isolated ligament laxity, however. Studies of ligamentous laxity in diverse populations have shown that ligamentous laxity is specific to gender, age, and popula- tion." To be clear, macrotrauma is later defined as a big injury and microtrauma is repetitive use. (At first glace, I thought microtrauma could be referring to stretching...it does not.) That article only links ligamentous laxity to injury...therefore, it makes no claim that stretching and injury prevention are in any way related. There are a bunch of good articles summed up in this review which would be a great place to start (and I believe it is open access!): http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/37/1/13.full The only mention of stretching cites a study: http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/35/2/103.fullthat looked at a few factors that correlated with injury rates. It found that about half of the injured players stretched while about 75% of the uninjured players stretch. This was the 3rd best predictor of injury rates after history and shoe type, so you could easily draw your own conclusion there. (People who stretch are probably more likely to easy warmups and not just jumping right into it.) Basketball is a much more shock/twisting type of activity than straight up running as well. So, we are still left without any evidence that stretching does any good. Doing a search instead of stretching before exercise: http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0,38&q=stretching+be... There you get a slew of meta reviews with the gist being: "Stretching was not significantly associated with a reduction in total injuries" - http://www.tothemaxfit.com/articles/pdf/FlexibilityInjuryReview.pdf ...don't stretch. |

Don't forget to add that most that perform it don't even know how to perform it correctly. |
