The app gives you split times, elevation and more actually. I have found it to be very accurate. Also it tells your mile time every mile along with your overall time. IMO the watch is more a hassle than the phone. I'm going to carry it anyway so might as well use it. I use as an iPod anyway
When I'm doing a running workout, I want to be able to hit the lap button on my watch and see the current lap time and pace. Also, the phone apps lose accuracy over short distances and curves like on a track.
I use iSmoothRun on my iPhone (and I know there are many other GPS apps that do the same thing ) for things like long runs and easy runs where I am just interested in basic data like time and distance after the fact. It will also give me my current lap pace by voice in my headphones, but it isn't as fast or as good as seeing the split times on the watch. So it just depends on how how much real-time feedback you want.
