Pre-race routine:

This was a race I had put together a relay team for. My goal was to get some exposure to this distance and think about doing it "solo" next year.
Event warmup:

Lots of rain and problems with parking delayed the start by about 1/2 hour...another cold warm up in the lake...
Swim

Comments:

This was my part of the relay so I only can give a detailed report here! So...I was hoping to do really well on this...although I knew since this was the first time for me at this distance in competition I might be challenged. I had no concern as to being able to complete the distance...but I was concerned about the weather. I got in the water to warmup and saw Rob (CaptJackSparrow...it was good to see a friendly face...thanks Rob! The lake was very rough and the waves were pretty much interferring on every side...Also, the fog/cloud was very low and it was very hard to see the next buoy in line...the only saving grace was that marine patrol had set up at the corners and had their blue flashing lights on...so that was something to sight on...but it was a very tough swim...many times I would find myself coming up to a buoy (when I could finally see it) I would take ten or so good strokes and would look up and still be in the same place...the waves kept pushing me backwards! Despite all of this I felt strong...and I did not feel panicked despite the rough water...I knew I was in the water for a long time... When I came out of the water and saw that it took 44 minutes I was really disappointed (Sorry KathyG!)...but then I saw other people's times and I felt pretty good about it!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...I thought this was a good first exposure...made me feel I could probably do this in most conditions!

This was a good exchange...chip to Tim and then Tim was off.

Comments:

Tim did an awesome job...all of his updates prior to the race was that he would do this in 3 hours and 45 minutes...he smashed that time. I loved watching the pro's come in on this race. I never go to just spectate and I was thrilled to be right at the Bike dismount and the run out...this allowed me to see the pro's and to shout for the BTer's that I saw (Rob and Jorge)!
Transition 2

Comments:

Quick exchange and Rob was off!

Comments:

Rob finished strong with a smile on his face!
Post race
Warm down:

So now you want to know if I would do this "solo"...the answer is definitely YES! Now I have committed to it!

Event comments:

Again, this race has gotten really large...I would have to think twice about doing THIS race as my first HIM...but I love the overall commaraderie...

hey, you beat me out of the water by 3 minutes and I was pretty pleased with my swim time considering the conditions.

I did see Rob when he was bringing it home on the run.  Easy to pick him out with the BT singlet on.  I don't think he knew who I was when I cheered him on.

Sorry I didn't meet up with you.  I didn't know you were going.  Next time for sure!

Laura, You did awesome...had fun and did something difficult given the circumstances...wow I'm proud of you!

Glad you see it as another challenge that you will do in the future.

Time is of no importance really, you had fun, enjoyed the day, and those are the things that count. Given that the swim was tough, in the future most will be easier for you!

Can't wait to see you at Cranberry and then kick butt at Firmman!

Yup, thank heavens for those flashing blue lights on the marine boats.  They kept me in line as well!  I guess you were out there swimming just a few strokes ahead of me.  Athenas/Clydes were racing with the relays, so we were out there together.

I do recall seeing a BT.com race suit on the run -- maybe that was Rob?  It's all a blur now...

Anyway, great swim!  Way to hang in there with the waves and chop.  You can definitely do the whole thing and have a lot of fun with it next year.

Nice swim Laura!

At first I thought you did the WHOLE half, and I was like.....how did she get away with that without me knowing??

I think you'll be more than ready for this next year! We'll remind you when registration opens! Wink
